  • What kind of names do pubs or other drinking establishments have in your country?

  • Story time. When living in Helsinki, Finland my group of friends was approached by some tourists. 'Excuse me, we're looking for this pub'. Okay, lots of them around, which one? 'It's called, like, the bubble on the hill...?'

    Took a good ten seconds of head scratching and then one of us got it. Mäkikupla! Literally Bubble On The Hill but since the names are so random over here, none of us had given second thought about the funny name.

    Told this story online and a Finnish person posted a confession. They'd been in Australia or whereever and recommended that particular place to someone. Looks like someone remembered.

    what should be the amount of work hours per week? is there a threshold where it starts to affect your life?

  • I joined my present employer to do a project and got to set my preferred hours, which I set at 4 days of 6 hours per week. That was lovely! They later took me on full time, whereupon I started working 5 days but was able to keep the 6 hour workday and that has been the norm since. Pretty much ideal IMO.

  • CDs I bought, the massive trove of albums I've ripped from friends and library CDs since around 1997 and everything dl'd from Spotify and more recently Tidal (switched not only because ethics and quality - mostly because spotify-dl started breaking up :o) now lives on my home server, backs up once a week and is available to grooving to via Jellyfin over the Net. So much debt of gratitude to Jellyfin for enabling this.

    At home I'll plug the phone into a USB Toslink box and play lossless over the speakers; in the car over Bluetooth into car stereo (which has seen a little bespoke work). Headphones I haven't bought into, I'd rather be in the moment with all senses when out and about. Same goes for motorcycle riding, music is too much of a distraction.

    New music comes along by following Pitchfork's album reviews. They are pushed out to RSS so that I browse them over morning coffee.

    There is no such thing as a favourite band when one really listens to music. I get kicks from still discovering new stuff at a ripe age. One newish band that blew my mind is black midi.

  • Self-hosted, federated Matrix instance with wife, kids and even my old folks on it, yay! Even have video conferencing self-hosted on there. Telegram presence via mautrix-telegram bridge also there. Nheko on desktop and Element X on mobile. Fearing every Postgres update as it's an Arch server, other than that life's peachy.

    Still on IRC (Libera) for shits and giggles with weechat.

  • Was going to say this exact thing, good thing someone else of sound sense has typed the correct answer. Just turn the screw pictured open (counter-clockwise) ever so slightly to let air out (makes hiss) and tighten once water comes out (makes no sound).

    Source: Nordic man of the house. I did this a lot until we put in a new heating system with an automatic valve at the main heat reservoir.

  • Here's one who always liked customising the daily driver computers - Sway, custom configs, painting the laptop cover with very permanent enamel paint. Reasons are to make it run reliably, serving my preferences and looking nice and cared for.

    Similar reasons apply with the car and motorcycle, only with the car it's not cheap fun (bike stuff is actually very reasonably priced). But I figured since I get paid every month, I'm going to use money on what sparks joy. And I'm keeping it sensible, only one car and bike at a time :}

  • My scheme might come useful to somebody.

    On the home server, there is a 2 Tb solid state drive and a 2 Tb spinning drive. Stuff goes on the SSD, it's a regular ext4 volume mounted at /work. The spinning drive is configured to spin down after 10 min when not in use.

    Once a week a script mounts the spinny one, runs an rsync from SSD to it, then unmounts. Thus the spinny one only runs about 20 min per week: it's going to last forever. If the SSD borks it's easily replaced and repopulated.

  • Music. I played piano since very young, started making tracks on 4-track and the Amiga around 10 years old, kept going deeper with the demoscene and playing in + recording bands. Went on to do a music degree, got a job making music...

    Hobby became serious, then it turned into a ball and chain. I turned around, did a second degree and started working in a different field. Thought I'd keep music as a hobby, but now it presents a different face: no point in making tracks if nobody but me ever listens, nor is there point in producing other people for free with all the invested time most likely never being too fruitful.

    I did find a new hobby though. Working out is the antithesis to working on art projects. Put an hour in, get an hour's worth of gains back. Love it :D
