  • I think they buried the real lede here:

    The same survey also found that, for the first time in nearly a decade of its polling series, voters perceive the Democratic Party as having a better plan for the economy than the Republican Party.

    That we're in a positive environment for the Democrats is a kinda "no-duh" situation. The out-party is usually favored during mid-term elections. There are also some well known economic issues which are working against the GOP (see: gas prices). So, we'd expect the Democrats to have an advantage. But that shift in trust of which party is better for the economy would mark a major sea change in opinion, if it sticks. As dumb as it may be, the American public has a habit of responding that they trust Republicans more on the economy than they trust the Democrats. If that changes, the Republicans would lose one of their major pillars of support.

    That said, I'm not sure I'd put all that much stock in polling yet. Americans have a habit of not really paying attention to politics until very late. The common wisdom being that most people aren't paying attention until after Labor Day. Those of us subscribed to a community named "politics" are likely the exception and not the norm. So, polls and averages showing a D+6 environment are nice, but not all that useful yet. And things are likely to shift quite a bit before the actual midterms. Also, three months is a lot of time for Trump to do more stupid stuff or get stupidly lucky. We could be even more bogged down in the Iran quagmire or a deal could be struck which extricates the US, re-opens the Strait and brings down gas prices.

    All that to say that, this is interesting as a quick check on where things seem to be right now, but it's probably not that predictive of where things will be in three months.

  • Even when a company is doing things pretty well with a VPN, all it takes is one mistake and the cat is out of the bag. At one of my previous employers, we had a fairly good setup with VPNs using single sign on via our IdM provider. IdM enforced SSO and the VPN had a number of policies setup which kept good control over what users could login. And then someone had the brilliant idea to take an old VPN appliance, reset it to factory defaults and configure it just enough to work on our network and then hung it out on the internet for some sort of test (our configuration management left a lot to be desired). Of course, that led to it being left there for a couple months and an attacker finally found it. They also had a valid username/password combination which got them in the door.

    Security is hard and often expensive. But still, compared to "we put out OT devices on the internet" a basic VPN is a huge step up.

    I work in cybersecurity and this sort of thing drives me straight up a wall. I understand why these sort of things exist, but they fail so often that they are worthless. My work has the Microsoft "urldefense" bullshit URL mangling. As far as I can tell, it has never stopped someone from clicking on a phishing email. In fact, since the URL now looks like a Microsoft URL, users think they are safe to click on. All the money and effort for training, right in the shit can. Thanks Microslop!

    Those protocols obviously need a bit of a review. Though, my bet is on Martin being one of those leaders who regularly doesn't follow protocol and throws a tantrum when other people try to insist he does. This sort of failure happens because the staffers are more afraid of pissing off the tantrum thrower than breaking protocol.

  • It wouldn't surprise me to learn that China managed to dump voter information. State governments have been pretty bad at security for a long time. The question on that is, "so what?" Sure, it sucks to have your data get siphoned off to yet another database. But, unless you are a significant target for blackmail or other high level operations, there's not much China is going to do with it. It's not really useful for election fraud.

    But the idea of the GOP waiting until August and then dragging him behind the woodshed is an interesting thought. They get Vance to end the Iran War and look like a responsible adult after the toddler Trump and maybe ameliorate any blue wave a bit.

  • For all the desire to say, "good riddance to bad rubbish", this does create an electoral problem for Dems in the Senate. And I can't help but wonder if the GOP found something to buy him off with.

    If the Dems are going to have any shot at taking control of the Senate this cycle and having some power to check the worst excesses of Trump, they need every seat they can get. Fetterman going officially Nazi means the Dems are going to have to win all the close races and even some not so close ones. It would be hilarious to see Texas go blue. But, as poor a candidate as Paxton is. And even with Talarico polling a slight lead, my money is on Texas being a disappointment for Dems again.

  • Don't go away mad, just go away.He certainly could have handled this with more class, but at least the way is now clear for a replacement which doesn't have this sort of cloud over their head. Hopefully, the convention process the State Democrat Party uses is done with enough transparency and openness to keep the replacement from being seen as a complete shill. But, that will remain to be seen. Democrats in Maine really need to unseat Collins, if there is to be any chance of flipping the Senate. Even with her gone, I'm not sure I'd put money on Democratic control of the Senate. But if Collins manages to hold on, I'd think the chances drop to something between zero and nil.
