  • Not fucking wrong lmfao

  • Oh lol no I was referring to:

Lura Thok and Jett Reno being a lesbian couple which made me scream as a fan of both Tig and Gina as two lesbian comedians but also Jay'Den and Kyle, the Klingon/Human gay couple from the Academy and War College respectively.

    SAM does work though lol

OH MY GOD SHE COULD HOLD MOOPSY WITH NO PROBLEM

  • What's Her Name being Holly Hunter's character? Nahla Ake? I'm still struggling on names too, don't worry lmfao Lura Thok is the one that fucks me up the most but Gina Yashere did such a good/hilarious job.

  • Honestly that was my reaction too. Deeply worried about the show and hesitant but willing to watch it just for him. I fell in love with basically everything in the show. As much as I love Discovery... this I think is better. Still love the USS Discovery more than the USS Athena though.

  • Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (Released in 2026) takes place in 32nd Century (Discovery-Era) and follows a group of 1st-year Cadets going to the Academy, the Academy itself also for the first time going back to Earth after 100 years under the chancelorship of Captain Nahla Ake (played by Holly Hunter). It also has returning faces like Robert Picardo as The Doctor/EMH from Star Trek: Voyager as the lead Medical Officer for Starfleet Academy and Tig Notaro as Jett Reno, an instructor at the Academy, and features a new hero ship, the USS Athena, a ship that 'docks' with San Francisco to act as both campus and training vessel for the Academy.

The primary plot of the first season revolves around one of these students, Caleb Mir, attempting to find his mother after being seperated from her as a child. He does this with the help of Captain Nahla Ake, the woman who seperated him from his mother. The only person they know who is connected to the disappearance of his mother is Nus Braka (played by Paul Giamatti), a criminal guilty of murder and so much more.

Generally, the show explores the difficulties of finding your place in the world and trying to find your personal path. While this is a 'teenagery' and 'CW' style narrative, it never actually feels like it's aimed at teenagers. Nor does it feel light, glib or trite. Just like the best Star Treks, there are moments where your heart sinks and moments where it soars.

    Give it a shot <3

  • NO GODDAMMIT FIX IT. GET RID OF THE SHOES AND MAKE HER SIT COMFORTABLY

Seriously though. As a gay man I felt so seen through both you-know-who (well all of them) but also the fact that she can't sit in a fucking chair correctly. None of us apparently can.

  • He's the main villain of Starfleet Academy lol thus the out of context.

I was genuinely fucking worried about Starfleet Academy. All the posters made it look really teenager-y and a lot of the branding felt that way too. Then it opens with the Federation seperating a mother from her child in a dark as fuck trial. Me and a buddy I met here on Lemmy watched every episode of the season together on Plex and we were surprised everytime but no more than that. We both had the same kinda thoughts, although me more worried than him I think, but were shocked at how well it took it around.

Only real issue that we both had and completely agreed on (minor disagreements are always to be expected but especially with us... a venn diagram that barely overlaps. Love you bro <3) was they used some pop music during the first and final episode we could have done without. But otherwise?

Added brand new worlds and civilizations. Added new cultures. Expanded on Star Trek lore and what happened with Sisko. Gave a satisfying narrative conclusion to some of The Doctor's story/suffering from some stuff in Voyager/Prodigy. Did the typical reflection of the world through Star Trek (seperating kids from families is just the start of it), screamed hope/optimism/empathy/love/compassion from every rooftop, eye candy to fuck with them seeming to have designed the outfits almost exclusively for showing off one of the guys enormous-ass muscles (and enormous ass-muscles). And most importantly?

Paul Giamatti as the campiest and Star Trek-iest villain since Q and Harry Mudd. Kind of a mix of both to an extent. Dude was acting the fucking paint off of the walls. It was absolutely fucking incredible. Also Holly Hunter as Captain was a fantastic choice. I stan Captain No Shoes.

People gonna love/hate it. But it's doing shockingly well critically. Most of the complaints have been based around it being not like the older Treks but Trek doesn't stay stagnant. It boldly goes. Explores strange new opportunities and expands on the world. No part of it stamps down on what came before, it just builds off of giants. If people don't like it, meh. Don't gotta watch it. But I'd give it at least a chance if I were you. After all, what Starfleet vessel goes to Red Alert immediately without doing some exploration first?

  • Hell yeah. When I was jumping through for screenshots I happened to just land on that moment and it was too good a chance to pass up taking a screenshot of that too lol

  • So many people complained about the buggy but I never got it. We've seen tons of situations where the shuttles aren't totally viable so it makes sense that they'd have a backup. And humans like to have fun. If Picard never had a reason to bring that out until now, makes sense he'd want to enjoy it the same way any Dad does when they pull out a new tool/toy for the first time.

  • Penis ornaments. Why? Why the fuck not? Shout out to @CelloMike@lemmy.world for the amazing wooden starship model.

    I need more

  • Oh that's a far better joke.... I'm stealing that one. That's fantastic.

  • Okay that got me. I'm referencing the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle and, more specifically, the Observer Effect which says that the study of something will inherently change it. Granted, that applies to physics in that case but it's still used in reference to studying various other things as there is no way to study something without leaving a footprint of some kind. That footprint alone is enough to vary the study or, as Starfleet is afraid of with Pre-Warp civilizations, vary the thing you're studying.

  • Which doesn't line up with anything that Starfleet stands for. Either they're going cloaked literally all the time and never contacting any outside races, which is antithetical to everything that the United Federation of Planets does, or you're only using it in hotzones that Starfleet actively tries to avoid in the first place. But you're also forgetting about the major risk of running cloaked. If someone does detect you, your intentions are going to seem immediately suspect. You're not going to come off like some noble, space-faring organization that strives for the best in everyone if you're hiding from people and spying on them before revealing yourself.

  • Yeah, that's all I've got too. Research/study of Pre-warp civilizations is literally the only thing that I can think of but Heisenberg says "Good fuckin' luck with that one" too. Maybe the cloak could break it.

  • Why?

Phase tech that would allow them to purposefully go through matter? Sure. But the cloak part isn't really necessary when the whole purpose is to explore. It's useful for combat but Starfleet actively tries to avoid battle as much as possible. Having invisible weapons or starbases just feels like it goes against what the Federation stands for. To not hide in shadows but stand up and speak truth.

    To me anyway

  • I haven't had or put up a Christmas tree since I was a child. I don't see the point. I don't do any seasonal decorations. Time moves so fast that it's like a week later I'm taking down a bunch of shit I paid money for and can barely use.

  • For REAL. The work and attention to detail that went into it is astounding. Sitting in the center of the riser on my desk so I just see it all the time. Second I clean up the desk I'll have a pic...
