    If yes, why exactly does it have to be in the one that is a safe space for someone else?

  • No. It really doesn't matter. A safe space is a safe space. You think the guys at the shooting clubs do nothing but shoot? They talk there about men-specific issues.

    There are plenty of non-gender restricted shooting clubs in my country and there are womens toilets in my country too. It's not about women not being allowed to piss or shoot. It's about these specific women not being ok with the fact that safe spaces for men exist.

    Same as the guys in the OP. They don't protest because they specifically need to be in this meeting because they want to discuss women-specific issues. They are just not ok with safe spaces for women existing.

    In both directions it's a power thing. People like that (no matter the gender) get off on taking things away from others. The point is not to be able to be in that place, but to take away safe spaces from someone else. And that's an asshole move for asshole reasons no matter if the person doing that is a man or a woman.

    So what about you? Are you ok with male safe spaces existing? If not, tell me, what reason for that do you have that is not an asshole reason?

  • You know, this is quite common for both genders. A major part of earlier feminist demands was "We want to get in on all the male spaces". You know, having the right to go to football games, military, and so on.

    It's currently quite a big political topic in my country that feminists are demanding that some traditional men-only shooting clubs should open up to women. A ton of women demanding that the clubs are opened for women aren't even interested in actually joining these shooting clubs (and in fact often wouldn't even be allowed to join because they are regional clubs and they are from a different region), but that doesn't matter.

    What they protest for is not that they can actually join, but that they'd be allowed to join in theory.

    It's also a quite big thing over here that women started to go into men's restrooms during events and such when there's a queue on the women's restroom.

    So why would anyone be surprised that the same thing happens the other way round too?

    There are always some idiots who's identity hinges on making sure others can't have safe spaces.

  • It's not hard to make a waterproof battery and a waterproof phone. All you need to waterproof using gaskets is the connector between both of them.

  • There's a book about 101 ways to cut potatoes. Perhaps that could be a real mike-drop bit of evidence that we shouldn't be cooking potatoes.

    This would be a valid argument if to read someone else's recipe you'd need to know every way of potato cutting they might use.

    The problem with C++ isn't that you can't use it in a good way. The problem is that you can use it in a million different ways. The best way for your application is often not readily visible and reading someone else's code might be really difficult because they have a weird favourite way of doing things that you might not know.

    Python does that quite well (it's got other failings, but in this regard it's good):

    There's a class that's just called List and there's a literal that creates an instance of it: []. It's implemented using an array list, since that's the most sensible options for most list use cases. If you need another type of list, they are still available, but the default implementation is clearly visible and uses a sensible implementation.

  • I don't think it was a comedy roast, more like a rant.

    The core message of the video (and I do agree with that) is that C++ is incredibly cluttered and that there are dozens of ways to do the same simple thing.

    And sure, you don't need to know them all when writing code, but when reading someone else's code you need to know all of the options to understand it.

  • That's pretty much my point. Actual Nosql does have use cases, but more often than not it was used for hype reasons. "Everyone uses Nosql, let's not become legacy and hop on the Nosql train!"

    Document DBs came out of Nosql, and are pretty much the same as SQL for most use cases, just with their own funky syntax.

    And then again there are the use cases where people use SQL without relations, basically as a Nosql DB. Just do ORM for everything, do the database stuff in memory in Java and just use SQL to dump crap into.

  • Vetting sources is the one thing we need journalists for. If they don't vet their sources, their work is without merit.

    Reading at least the methodology section of a paper and googling if the researchers and the institute exists, is the bare minimum of what a decent journalist should do.

    If they can't do that, then there's no advantage of a journalist over some random person posting on Facebook. Even Youtubers usually vet their sources better.
