  • As with everything, don't take it as a gospel. It's a tool that can be somewhat beneficial in the right circumstances, and it can also be abused and lead to horrible results if used dogmatically.

    Uncle Bob is seriously not a master or guru but instead more of a well-known blogger-turned-author.

    (And using "Clean" in the naming of a guideline is an offence that should be punished with... cavities in his teeth.)

  • 22 years were always long, especially when you are talking about the edge times just before there were massive changes.

    Take for example 1913 vs 1938 in Austria. (Ok, technically it's 25 years, but it's not much more than 22 years.)

    In this time span you had:

    • Monarchy, Austrohungarian Empire, at peace
    • WW1 starts (1914)
    • Austria loses WW1 (1918), Monarchy fails, first Austrian Republic is created.
    • First radio station goes live (1924)
    • Roaring 20s
    • The head of government makes a coup, declaring the Federal State of Austria (Ständestaat), a fascist dictatorship. (1934)
    • The Nazis take over Austria (1938)

    You can find similar periods of rapid change in every country. For the US look at e.g. the independence war or the civil war. Or the time before, during and after WW2.

    Yes, we are in a time of somewhat rapid change, but neither is that unique, nor is it especially rapid.

    And the comparison between 1890 and 1960 is entirely invalid. Much more changed in this time frame than between 2004 and 2026.

  • Mozilla hasn't been a great advocate for openness for a very long time. They are just a little less bad than Google, but mainly so because they only control the browser and nothing else. If they had more resources they'd be exactly like Google.

    I use their stuff for exactly that reason: they are not as powerful as Google, but make no mistake, they are just like the others.

  • Seriously, amazing piece of kit and pretty open and hackable at that.

    Way fun to use.

    Only downside: the reverse bowden tubes make printing with PLA annoying because it keeps breaking in the tubes if you leave it in there for a few days without printing.

    The upside: it prints PETG just as well as PLA, so I just stopped using PLA alltogether.

  • I used to recommend the Bambulab A1 (Mini), because they are amazing, really cheap printers. But Bambulab in the meantime Bambulab is pulling an Apple in a very bad way, so can't recommend them anymore.

    I have a Snapmaker U1, a decidedly not-budget printer, but I can totally recommend that one for anyone who's seriously into 3D printing. What an awesome machine!

  • Windows 8 didn't have a reason to look like a child drew the UI in paint. I remember well the moment I first booted up the technical preview of Windows 8, being flabbergasted by how bad it looked. I choked it up to being a technical preview, they likely didn't get around to put decent graphics in, but no, it stayed like that.

    Windows 8 also didn't have a reason to go touch-first (and really touch-only) on the UI for a OS with a non-touch install base of around 99+%. That's terrible UX.

    Any decent UI/UX guy would have been able to tell them that they should make the UI switch between desktop mode and touch mode depending on what hardware was present or which mode the user selected.

    As you said, it was "only" an hour of fiddling with the registry to bring it back, so it was mostly there. A decent UI/UX designer would have just added a button or an autoselection feature.

    But since they said "screw professionals, let the managers do the design" you got shitty UI/UX that caused a massive flop.

    The parallel I was drawing that with Win11 and the help of AI they are doing the same. They fire the experts and have the managers and other non-experts do the job of the experts and it falls apart.

  • I damaged my stock Snapmaker U1 build plate with a print of 2 layers TPU 85A topped with a solid PETG print.

    TPU 85A only comes off the build plate because you can bend and peel it off. The PETG on top of it stopped me from doing that. It was a dumb idea.
