as alive as you need me to be

  • You're not missing anything, it is a giant scam.

Your money is going to the profits if the shareholders of your health insurance company.

The only part of the US economy that is actually growing substantially in terms of workforce... is the healthcare sector.

And that's not mostly doctors and nurses.

    It's mostly paper pushers.

There are so many healthcare paper pushers now, that if you actually waved a magic wand and implemented a single payer system with much more sane pricing for everyone and a less bloated set of paper pushers... something like a million or two million peoole would lose their jobs.

    This country is fucked.

Everyone trying to explain to you how the concept of insurance works is giving you a needlessly complex explanation.

There are many countries that have public health care that works better and costs less, some that even have private insurance options that are no where near as insanely price gauging as the US system.

Our system is a giant, legal, fraud/scam, that intentionally makes things as expensive as they possibly can be, and delivers as little service as it possibly can, all that corporate c suite and shareholders can quite profit off of your misery.

  • Well shit, TIL.

Genuienly thank you for the uh... legal education, I guess you'd say.

Maybe its just that the state I am from is particularly weird about this, or maybe I just had an unfounded notion.

Either way, always appreciate being less wrong.

And yeah woooey assault is not what most people think it is, either as a crime in and of itself, or, as a descriptor of a class of weapons.

  • Ah shit ok, you're right then, this 'highway' is pretty much just 'any publicly maintained road' in Nebrasaka.

  • Thats true, that is an important technicality.

From what I understand of various states road laws and... basically dialects... 'freeway' and 'highway' technically mean slightly different things, by state, and sometimes literally by county or city.

So... yeah. I'm not from Nebraska, you might be right.

But the... intent, that you're ascribing, to the law... I mean thats a factor in how a judge would rule, but... the actual texts of the relevant laws are factors as well.

  • Or maybe the infrastructure in your building in or fairly near a city just sucks, and you use a 5G base station for internet.

This kind of thing is... extremely common in areas that broadly have unsubstantial net infrastructure, or just poorer areas of developed cities.

  • I... I know the technical difference.

Apologies for using shorthand that you immediately interpreted correctly.

Shorthand that... you know, was used in the article.

    Paraphrasing Sam Altman.

Because most readers of tech news can contextually figure out what is meant by that.

  • Oh its a utility?

... so it should be publically owned and operated?

He didn't even say 'like' or 'akin to' a utility.

    He said 'is a utility'.

    ... So then democracratize it.

And yeah, if WiFi is like that too, then yeah, lets have the public manage that as well.

... I wonder if ChatGPT can draw Altman looking at a broken clock being right twice a day.

  • Just want to chime in and say that, as best I can tell, in Nebraska, vehicular gun mounts/racks are legal, I cannot find any law specifically mandating or banning or regulating them, beyond uh...

    https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=28-1204.04

Which says that if you're in a school zone, your vehicular gun must be unloaded and in a locked gun mount within the vehicle.

The most relevant law I can find says that shotguns in a vehicle can't be loaded, while said vehicle is on the highway.

    https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=37-522

    Class III Misdemeanor.

There does not appear to be a law that just says 'any gun in a vehicle must be unloaded', full stop.

So... if the driver was never on the highway...

No actual crime, as far as I can tell.

    Maybe I missed something?

    https://giffords.org/lawcenter/state-laws/guns-in-vehicles-in-nebraska/

(Not that I think that is any kind of a sane approach to gun law, nor was this a sane demonstration of gun handling practices... just trying to lay out the facts as best as I can.)

  • Control, control! You must learn control!

    Do. Or do not.

    There is no 'try'.

  • Its such an absurd joke, its my favorite stupid joke in the entire show.

Its uh... 'pizza the hutt died of eating himself to death' levels of just ridiculous.

  • I did.

(i actually took AP Stats and learned a good deal more than that)

    But many, many do not.

And it is of vital importance that that anyone in this ... final stage capitalist / technofeudal dystopia understand it well.

The US education system at least has fallen off a goddamned cliff, average kid is now 3 years behind grade level in literacy, I think its similar with numeracy.

Shits gettin' real bad, really fast... if you have kids, you need to make sure they understand compound interest.

Got an actual belly laugh out of me, oh god, I'm crying... thank you OP.

  • Well, if I do it, I'm now a Professor of Applied Moral Philosophy...

  • I'm sorry your coworkers have terminal NPC-itis.

I will make sure to press X to pay respect.

  • Compound Interest.

    and

If it seems to good to be true, you're probably getting scammed.

  • And my point is that you basically can't.

100% remote jobs are basically only possible to obtain for a small number of boomers, older gen x.

There's no path to it now, if you go into the sources I listed further, latest figure was only 11% of jobs listings that indicate they're remote of any kind are 100% remote.

The corpos want less and less 100% remote jobs, and they're nearly all for highly experienced people.

Most job listings that list any kind of remote work are actually just lying about that if you read the entire description.

Its an illusion, for anyone under roughly 40.

Even the privileged boomers that replied to me indicated they have no useful advice to give to a younger person.
