  • What is the point of Linux updates?

  • There have been a few changes I've noticed: one of them is scrolling on the dock works again; some GUI changes with GNOME; and I think most of the other stuff is back-end work. IIRC they're migrating most of the code base to rust for better stability.

    I'm not sure who's calling them game changers... maybe people that rely on clicks/viewer counts for income.

  • I study biochem/microbiology. Recently there's been a new(?) discovery about photoresperation actually being benificial to the plant. Photo respiration is when photosynthesis accidentally happens to an oxygen which creates toxic molecules and was always thought of as wasteful. Billions of dollars have been spent to 'solve' this problem when, unsurprisingly, billions of years of evolution have solved it already.

    IMO it's why plants don't do as well as we expect with high CO² concentrations (iirc)... the paper is behind a pay wall though, so I haven't read the whole thing yet but the mechanism has unfortunately been called the Bloom Cycle and is set to confuse countless undergrads in the future.

  • There is/was a group of engineering students at the University of Calgary doing just that. It cost thousands of dollars, but worth it IMO if one can afford that.

  • I just moved out of a city with amazing cycling infrastructure to the suburbs of a larger city... this city has okay transit but their cycling infrastructure is basically telling drivers to please not hit cyclists on the shared roads. At least until you get downtown you'll be meandering through neighbourhoods because they don't want to take away peoples parking spots on the main roads.

  • I drive a 2016 Raleigh Sport with a milk crate attached to the rear rack with zip ties. I WISH I drove a 2026 A.B. E-Cargo with an EP6 motor but those are about 5k and they're not sold locally so...

  • AI art is like, if someone bought millions of fun-house mirrors, placed a bunch of random pictures in in front them and took a picture of whichever mirrors just happened to look somewhat cohesive. It's not art, it's just cruddy reflections of creativity done at great cost.

  • Well, the game-master is making the server increasingly class-locked and I'm not sure if Lumberjack is a class that's needed rn. You can check the FAQ tho... I do know that we need support classes pretty bad (Nurse, Doctor, etc.) but that's just because they've advertised it.

  • I sometimes imagine a future where, if someone suddenly lost access to LLMs/AI agents, they wouldn't be able to function properly or maybe wouldn't even be able to hold a conversation. The more dramatic side of me imagines them essentially going comatose but that's silly. Hopefully.

    They essentially outsourced their writing and speaking ability, and it atrophied (Broca's and Wernicke's area).
