  • IMO, Facebook was pretty great if you were a thirsty college student when it first launched.

    But once that initial cohort of users started getting married, posting baby pictures, and luring grandparents to the platform, everything started getting pretty bad.

  • IMHO, there is a fair amount of misinformation floating around this issue.

    Newsom hasn’t been pushing to blindly kick people off the street with no where to go. The draft ordinance is about filling unfilled shelter beds.

    So if you had 200 beds and 1000 unhoused people, Newsom wants to be able to clear enough encampments to get 200 people into shelters. Cities wouldn’t clear all the encampments, only enough to get close to filling the available beds.

    And that said, that policy doesn’t really account for the fact that shelters can be pretty dangerous and worse than the streets. So although this policy sounds compassionate, it’s actually quite flawed.

    She was part of a horde of people who broke into the capitol and started assaulting police officers and she was actively leading the charge through a barricade that was erected to protect people escaping the capital.

    I don’t know how you watch those videos and think “yeah, she was innocent.”

    The draft ordinance basically says that, if there are available beds, a city can clear a campsite if they give people 48 hours notice and direct people to the available shelter beds.

    Although, this ordinance does not address the fact that many shelters cause more harm than good. People are on the street because it’s safer for their wellbeing and belongings. No one seems to be talking about this.

  • Honestly, I feel like most companies didn’t do a big marketing thing about this stuff. If was commenting that pretty much just got promoted on the careers page so applicants knew about the company culture

    Also, because HR usually owns the careers page, and DEI teams usually roll in HR

    6 weeks ago they updated all their logos and signage to say max in grey instead of purple. Now they’re updating all the same collateral again to add “HBO” back.

    That marketing and brand team has to be the biggest clown show of all time.

    Somewhere in NY there is a sign company making a shitload of money swapping signs off the HBO building every few weeks.

  • He’s running on “offer a bed first, then you get penalized if you don’t accept the offer.” A lot of people in CA like the idea of offering help, then penalizing if you refuse to accept it.

    Problem is, people don’t understand why the big cities have so many unfilled beds. Many shelters are dangerous and or cause you to lose your belongings.

    The big thing that gets left out of these discussions is shelters. Newsom’s stance is that encampments should only be illegal if indoor shelter is unavailable.

    At face value, that doesn’t sound entirely unreasonable, but if you dig deeper, you’ll learn that a lot of indoor shelters endanger the wellbeing and belongings of unhoused people.

    IMHO, for any of this to work, shelters need to be evaluated for their ability to provide a safe and caring environment, and if those shelters don’t hold up, a county shouldn’t be able to count those places as beds.

    TL;DR: Newsom is arguing that people will be offered a bed first, but a lot of those beds are more dangerous than the street. And people need to start calling that out.
