  • Correct, no pate. I have no idea what Vietnamese pate tastes like, so I didn't know what to substitute for it in a non-meat version.

  • I think next time I will do just that (and choose flatter toppings to leave some space, the ones I used made the sandwich huge already).

  • I groaned reading this. Well done!

  • I would love to know what the pate is like, it was the main thing I didn't know how to substitute with a non-meat alternative. What is it like?

  • The greens are cilantro and mint. The sauce is a chili mayonnaise. The vegetables are carrots and radish marinated in a sauce made from lime juice, sugar, fish sauce, and chili. The bread is a baguette. My girlfriend can't eat onions, so those are out of the picture.

In my defense, I did try to follow recipes that claimed to be authentic. I just never had the real thing, so I can't tell.

  • Never had banh mi before, so no idea how authentic this is. It's kind of a double version of it, because I couldn't decide what toppings I wanted. The right half is vegan meat balls and mushrooms, the left half is fried tofu and calamari.

  • I guess it's one of those "justifiable but unwise" sort of things. If your company is doing a bug bounty program to stay on top of security vulnerabilities, what you don't want is to create the perception that the work of devs who look for these vulnerabilities isn't appreciated, for example, by skimping on bounties over technicalities.

Paying the 10k doesn't ruin the company and allows them to fix a section of code that may become a vulnerability in the future. Not paying the 10k saves them 10k at the price of the devs' trust that keeps this program effective. From a financial point of view, this is some very poor decision making.

  • I feel like the center of gravity is still very much on top of the platform.

  • Implying that vim users use arrows instead of hjkl? Blasphemy!

  • At least for my cat, I would say he both is dumb but definitely also plays dumb when I try to get him to do things. Sure, it's fun to jump over the human's arm and get a treat after, but what's also fun is to watch the human crawl pathetically on the floor while he tries to adjust his arm to a good jumping height.

  • My cat has a grooming routine that he starts when I go to bed. So my body's signal for sleeping is when everything goes quiet except the subtle sounds of lick lick lick.

  • At least for empirical research, I would go even further and say that most individual studies don't hold much weight and that the authors of such studies shouldn't receive too much credence until their findings have been replicated multiple times by independent researchers.

  • In Belgium, they would adapt by serving you six fries that have been fried in pork fat twenty times over.

  • I recently had one that was like "Due to recent events, we feel it necessary to remind everyone about the regulations in the Code of Conduct about accepting gifts from clients. Please read the CoC if you have not done so and confirm you have read it via this link. Signed HR". The link was fake, and the sender address was, too. It was a good fake though, because we actually do have a CoC and have to read/confirm about once a year. So I'm pretty sure it was a test to select people for training.

  • As long as you use it as plural, I'm fine with either version.

  • Huh, "IV guys" is what I call econometricians.

  • The comic definitely made it more confusing by choosing the main (non-intersecting) road of a T junction to illustrate this. In most countries, if this road splits into two lanes, the left-turning lane would split off, and the right-turning lane would go straight.

Edit: Apparently, this style of junction is more common in the US. In Europe, I've only seen this kind of junction on highways, but that would be without traffic lights and with a much longer turning lane.

  • Me too! My favorite method is to give the dough a quick fry in some oil before adding the toppings and transferring the pan to the oven. Gives a nice, crispy crust for an otherwise fluffy bottom.
