  • I'd say, even if a driver is making a mistake, yelling at them while they're driving is not the solution. I understand being nervous or frustrated while in the passenger seat, but yelling at the driver just doesn't seem helpful, even if you're yelling useful advice at them. If anything, you're likely distracting them from making a decision at a critical moment.

I'm very comfortable behind the wheel, but my wife is not. I could not imagine yelling at her while she's already in an uncomfortable position like that.

  • Nah. I'll continue enjoying Christmas as I damn well please. By all means continue to be a huge asshole about it, though. Happy holidays! 🎄🎅🎁

  • Whole lotta grinches in these comments. Of course Christmas has been exploited by big business to make money and yada yada, all that cynical bullshit.

To quote Charlie Brown, circa 1965 (which I mention to point out that this problem is nothing new):

I won't let all this commercialism ruin my Christmas. I'll take this little tree home and decorate it and I'll show them it really will work in our play.

You might as well hate Halloween because it gives overly-religious people an excuse for their Satanic Panic every year. It has nothing to do with the actual holiday itself, but how bad actors have co-opted it. And I say that as an atheist who enjoys Christmas in a secular way.

Christmas rules. I love having a time every year where I can reliably take some time off work and spend it with family.

That said, I'm not skipping Halloween by any measure; I love Halloween as well. Our decorations our going up today.

  • Could be! I've often wondered if the problem is something I can't really overcome with practice. I've watched many tutorial videos over the years, but my tongue just ends up doing nothing when I try to practice.

  • I can't roll my r's. I speak pretty decent Spanish (took 5 semesters in high school), but have never been able to figure out how to roll the r's, despite years of trying on and off to figure it out.

It's never a problem. On the rare occasions that I actually need to speak Spanish, nobody cares that I can't roll my r's.

  • My parents and all their friends used to use PTT with their Nextel phones. It was a super handy feature. I wonder why it fell out of style. Seemed more convenient and less tedious than a phone call for short communications.

  • They don’t want to sting you.

Maybe they don't "want" to sting anyone, but wasps can be very territorial and aggressive. Every time I've ever been stung by a wasp, I was minding my own business and just happened to piss one off by existing nearby.

  • I've tried the mint extract approach before, but it has never helped keep wasps away from our house. I wonder if efficacy varies based on the specific kind of wasps.

  • OP says, "with our current current level of technology."

We have the technology to overcome any logistics issue pertaining to eliminating scarcity (and by extension, poverty). What we lack is the societal structure.

  • Also, how can I get Lemmy to show codecommands formatting? I use Jerboa but don’t see a code block option.

For inline code like this, wrap the text in backticks like this.

For multi-line code, wrap the text in triple backticks like this

  • Did you try running a scan for malware? I usually use ClamAV. It's a simple, FOSS anti-virus scanner for Linux. Can run it from the terminal or install a version with a GUI if you'd prefer that.

  • Their products suck. Their markup is excessive and makes their products cost far more than the equivalent meat products.

This seems overly harsh to me. I've bought plenty of Beyond products (and Impossible, and Morning Star, and many other plant-based meat alternative brands) over the years and I've found them to be fine in terms of quality. I haven't bought them in a while, but I don't recall them being particularly more expensive than the other plant-based meats in the grocery store. Though I virtually always wait for those to go on a good sale before I buy them.

Since plant-based alternatives are competing with the meat industry, which is heavily subsidized to keep meat costs artificially low, I wouldn't say it's fair to say Beyond's products being more expensive than regular meat is why their business is failing. Other plant-based meats I've tried have generally always been more expensive than regular meat.

  • Relying on flatpaks seems like a bad idea.

A more reasonable take might be: don't install flatpaks willy-nilly without first verifying that they're maintained by the original developers (or an authorized third party, which is sometimes the case). The same way I wouldn't run apt install <package> without first checking the package info to ensure I'm installing a legit package (if I'm not already familiar with the specific package I'm installing).

  • It's a pretty legit album. I've listened to it several times over the years.

  • Perhaps "sophomoric"

  • This is the first I've heard of such a thing. Like TVs connecting to one another through Wifi Direct or BTLE and tethering their internet connection? Can you link to anything discussing this?

  • Damn, hoisted by my own petard.

  • Ah, good point; I'd forgotten that part.
