    Frankly, I'm surprised they still offer RSS feeds. They've been slowly but surely killing off all ways of accessing their content for years. One day they'll disable them, but for now they still work.

  • I don't have this issue when making spaghetti, but I do have this issue when making a box of mac and cheese for my kid. I use way less water for the latter, but it's the amount of water they specify on the box.

    The way I do it, the boil for both is usually not a rolling boil; the water has just started to bubble and steam. I started doing it this way years ago when someone told me that noodles typically cook (the starches gelatinize, I think) at a temperature just below boiling, so you don't actually need a full rolling boil to fully cook pasta.

    I salt the pasta water for spaghetti, but not for the mac and cheese.

    If I don't stir the mac and cheese regularly, it will aggressively stick together. The spaghetti will eventually stick together, but takes waaay longer. This never happens in practice because I manually stir every few minutes while I'm making the sauce.

  • The way I recall it being taught was that "elastic deformation" was deformation that didn't compromise the integrity of the original shape of the object (typically a rigid body in most of my textbook's examples, which could be where our understandings are deviating).

    One example my professor used to illustrate the concept in-person was with a paper clip. Bending one end the paper clip ever so slightly (such that it springs back into its original shape when you let go) was "elastic deformation" of the material. Bending the end of the paper clip enough such that it can't return to its original shape afterward was "plastic deformation".

  • It's been a long time since I took material science, but if memory serves, the terms "plastic deformation" and "elastic deformation" are applicable to any number of materials. Metal alloys have a range of "elastic deformation" as well as "plastic deformation". Plastics and elastics also have those ranges. It's unintuitive in everyday parlance, but it wouldn't be inaccurate in the mechanical sense to say "this plastic is elastic" because plastics do have ranges where their deformations are defined as elastic.

    I had the opposite experience. I worked hard to always finish my homework, but many of my classmates completely blew off both homework and classwork and still "passed". I knew kids who had all F's but would get their grades suddenly changed at the last minute to a C- because if the school failed too many kids they would lose federal funding.

    Felt like the value of my high school diploma plummeted considerably when I realized just how many of my graduating class were completely checked out for the entire curriculum. I dunno how different it is now; I graduated nearly two decades ago.

  • I can't agree with the description "PizzaCake for men". I read PizzaCake as well and the similarities to Penny Arcade are surface level at best. The comics about parenting are similar insofar as many comics about parenting are relaying an experience that many people can relate to, but outside of that, I would say Penny Arcade's comedic range is far broader than PizzaCake's. And I don't mean that as an insult to PizzaCake; PizzaCake just tends to focus primarily on parenting and politics while Penny Arcade covers a much wider berth of topics (in addition to just having many comics be glorified shitposts carried by erudite prose).

    Frankly, my biggest criticism of PizzaCake is that when they do choose to make political comics, they're typically really unfunny. They're just blunt statements about Republicans being stupid/evil/hypocrites/etc with no real setup or punchline. I enjoy bashing conservatives as much as the next guy, but I can't consider PizzaCake's political comics to be funny or insightful. They're mostly just variations on this:

  • I agree with the other comments here saying the comic just might not be your cup of tea, which is totally fine.

    But since you're asking for people to share their favorites, I'll share some of mine here. I think it's a fun comic, but they've also been making comics consistently since 1998 and they can't all be zingers. Most of my favorites tend to be on the absurd side, leaning on the characters' respective weird idiosyncrasies or their #relatable moments with getting older and having kids.

  • I love a good black bean burger. It has such a nice flavor profile that's clearly not trying to be a beef substitute. Load it up with lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese, hot sauce, any condiments or toppings you like on a sandwich.

    Grilled cheese and tomato soup is always a winner during the colder months.

    Can't go wrong with a big tray of roasted veggies. Chop up some potatoes, broccoli, brussel sprouts, carrots, etc. Drizzle of olive oil, lightly salt and pepper, throw it in the oven, bon appétit.

    A PB&J or a PB & Banana is a solid go-to.

    A basic quiche is mainly eggs, spinach, and cheese.

    Ramen and other pasta dishes that don't require meat. Some pasta, tomato sauce, cheese, and seasonings can go a long way. Fettuccine alfredo is another good one.

  • This, and standardizing what "this Thursday" and "next Thursday" mean. These terms have become functionally useless (to me) because of how they're used differently by different people. Whenever someone uses these terms to try to intimate a particular date to me, I just ask for the exact calendar date rather than the day of the week to avoid ambiguity.

  • Yes, I'm an American. Are you speaking from personal experience, or going off of what you see online? Because the horror stories you see online are not representative of the whole of society. The scary and outlandish stories make headlines and get shared around by people. Nobody shares links to videos or writes articles about "Father goes to park with kids, everybody is chill and nobody panics".

  • Don't buy too much into all the ragebait on the internet. I take my kid to the park all the time and no one has ever so much as looked at me sideways. And no other fathers solo-parenting their kids at the park have ever been accosted during the many, many hours I've spent there.

    Yes, some idiots foolishly assume man+kid=danger, but this is not a typical reaction at all. People who react negatively and make a scene are an extreme minority.

    This mentality misses the point, IMO. Even if the Harry Potter books were written in such a way that made even the staunchest critic go, "Wow, these books rival the works of of J.R.R. Tolkien and Shakespeare," that should have zero bearing on whether or not any given individual makes the decision to boycott an author's work on idealistic grounds.

    I like plenty of art that could be classified as schlock; not everything we enjoy has to be masterpiece theatre. I've boycotted all HP content ever since Rowling became a professional asshole, but I won't pretend I didn't enjoy the books and the films as a teenager.

    Here's a hard pill to swallow: shitty people can make good art. We can condemn bad people unequivocally without simultaneously needing their art to be bad. Michael Jackson was my favorite musician for many years, but hearing his music in 2026 always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But I won't pretend that it wasn't my jam and I certainly won't suggest that the music was mediocre.

    Edit: And although it goes without saying: this decision is always up to the individual. I have trans friends who don't concern themselves with Rowlings' sociopolitical views and continue to enjoy HP content. I don't begrudge them for that; we all have different, if arbitrary, boundaries.

  • I disagree that flippantly suggesting that conventional cooking methods produce "good" eggs compared to microwaved or powdered eggs qualifies as a "strong opinion". But I love hearing myself talk, so:

    I am unashamed to say that I am prejudiced against microwaved eggs for the same reason I'm prejudiced against making toast by microwaving bread. I haven't tried it, but I am free to intuit (correctly or incorrectly) that I wouldn't prefer it to how I already prepare eggs and toast. And in this economy, I'm not going to gamble an egg to see if I prefer it.

    Do you prefer microwaved eggs? How do you find the taste and texture compare to other cooking methods? How do they compare to powdered eggs?
