I think the Doctor Who fanbase is the actual worst out of all fanbases but I still like watching the show. you don't have to participate in the community if you want to use something. I use Linux but I'm not wearing thigh high socks and sitting in the Arch discord all day.
it's already happening. A lot of places are now realizing that advocating "vibe coding" and what have you is generating a lot of broken shit and tech debt. I'm a front end/back end dev consultant. been doing it for a couple decades now. and lately most of my contacts have been for fixing or refactoring or straight up rebuilding stuff built by a vibe coder.
Nothing produced by AI scales. None of it is encrypted, everything is exploitable, and eventually it all breaks. Example call I got last week: a startup had decided to set up their own mastodon instance for marketing reasons or whatever. they left the setup and configuration of it to their vibe coder who essentially had Claude Code set it up for them. basically build it out locally then throw it in some dockers for the server. real backwards ass way to do it. The problem is on weekly basis it was completely maxing out the storage on the server, thus it would crash and also crash whatever other instances for whatever they had on their (namely their own Gitea instance). Ends up the vibe coder in charge of setting this thing up either used Claude Code (doubtful) or straight up when to Claude.ai to walk them through the setup process. What was happening was all the images, videos, cached stuff was going into some extra .config dir and that's it. wasn't getting cleaned out, just all being thrown into some random directory and sitting there gradually growing. The fix was painfully easy just clean it out and make sure the cached stuff goes into the proper dirs and as a safety just run a cron job like once a week to clean it.
Digging around same company pretty much set up all their instances for various things the same way. a couple of their apps had major security holes cause AI really doesn't care or know what to do with that stuff. It was a mess.
And it's not just that company. like I said most of my calls now for work are just being a sort of digital janitor for AI and Vibe Coders. And I've dropped these companies some hints saying "look, hiring this dude who touts being a vibe coder is going to cost you way more money and tech debt in the long run then saving a few bucks right now. get rid of them and hire devs that actually know what they're doing." But most of these CEO's and CTO's only think in the short term. A year from now they'll all be collectively fucked. Expect a LOT more stories like the recent Tea App to come out. Everyone's data is at risk currently. I wouldn't sign up for shit using my ID or anything right now.
outside the US? not likely. I would even argue they're not even that popular or known in all of the US. but in the midwest and for some reason Southern Arizona? 100%.
I went to high school in Southern Arizona when my family lived in the US and yeah, pretty much everyone at my high school loved them. I liked one of their albums but I wasn't like a face painting merch buying fan. They didn't radio play or anything, it was all word of mouth and early internet stuff.
in college I worked at a local Best Buy and EVERY TIME a new ICP album would come out (which was frequently) we always had to put a couple extra people in the media department cruising the CD aisles and one posted outside the washroom because the Juggalos would constantly come in to steal the album. You could see them coming from a mile away cause they quite literally were advertising the band with all the merch they had on. But they would NEVER pay for the album, it was so odd. like buying a $50 ICP Hockey Jersey? sure. Paying $15 for the new album? no way fam, they're stealing that shit.
yup just did it this morning on my server because now I'm moving my stuff, yet again, away from European companies because of all this. it was painfully simple and easy. I just followed a guide I found on a linux blog and within 10minutes I had a VPN of my own up and running.
a lot of people. The other day I saw a post on mastodon by some politician or someone in the UK stating that if people find any site that is geoblocking the UK because of the age verification to report it to some link he provided. it was boosted A LOT with a lot of replies in support.
I can tell you exactly what happened. "Hey Claude, I need to configure and setup a DB with Firebase to store images from our application." and then promptly hit shift+tab and then went to go browse Reddit.
nothing was tested. nothing was verified. They let the AI do its thing they checked in on it after an hour or so. once it was done it was add all, commit -m "done", push origin master. AI doesn't implement security stuff. there was zero security here.
you're right as far it's intentions go. I honestly couldn't give a rats ass about what it intended to do what I have a MASSIVE issue with is that it did the EXACT opposite of what it "intended to do."
It didn't provide Women with a "safe space" because women's government issued IDs and their personal selfies were, quite literally, OUT IN THE OPEN. It opened Women who used the app to way more harm.
Their database, and i'm being extremely generous when I call it that, wasn't even password protected. not even a simple plain text password like "password123" there was NO password. at all. period. All I would have had to do was simply see where the app sent the scanned ID's, open a terminal, SSH into it WITHOUT A PASSWORD OR KEY, and then I now have access to the IDs of over 13,000 Women. Hell I probably wouldn't have even had to SSH into it, probably could have opened the damn thing from a web browser.
So when the media is saying 4chan "leaked" this stuff again they're being generous. It's like if you were walking down the street that Tea lived on and you noticed they left their door wide open so you decided to peak your head inside and while peaking your head in you noticed a box right by the door that had thousands of IDs in it so you picked up the box and walked out. Chances are other people got to this box before 4chan did, many people probably did, it's just that 4chan were the only ones to say "Hey I found this house with a wide open door and decided to pick up this box with all these IDs in it, neat huh?"
what I want to know is where do all these stock photos and movies and tv shows get those awesome sharpies that allow you write on windows so crisply? whenever i write on a window with a sharpie it always looks like shit.
I self host mine. Honestly I just self host as much as I can to avoid stuff like this because while many European companies are great you just never know. I was with Tuta but decided to self host, same for when I was using Filen for backups. Hell I'm even self hosting my git repos and search engine now.
if there were countries in Europe that were as politically idiotic as the US has been for literal decades I'm sure you'd read about that place more than the US.
I live in Canada and as far as political news goes here...it's dreadfully boring and I imagine it's the same for most of Europe. It's always been like that. even regular news here it's boring. nothing dramatic happens because unlike the US most of the world has their shit together when compared to the US.
