  • Look, I really want LinkedIn to disappear. But please, please, please don't focus on building/porting another "platform" to ActivityPub. A client application that can interact with C2S servers would be a thousand more times more interesting, for users and companies alike.

    ActivityPub already has an API. Let's just use it.

    I am still optimistic about it. It will be impossible to make one huge push in this direction, but slowly people will come to realize that this is the most sensible approach. For example, I've noticed that !nba@nba.space started to get more activity because !nba@lemmy.world is considering moving out of LW, but are spending a lot of time debating over a lateral move. If only they had accepted when I first invited them to join as mods from the topic-specific instance, this would've never been an issue.

    You have agency. If something bothers you, take initiative instead of putting the responsibility.on others.

    I think you are missing what I am trying to say: there is a significant probability we already are at this point, and I don't think we can beat this cat-and-mouse game. If you are serious about you mean, then the only reasonable course of action is to get out of the race entirely. If more people think like you, then the scale will tip even further in favor of the bots.

    All of this to say, if we are so AI averse that the mere possibility of having AI around should be enough for all of us to drop this whole thing here and go back to connection only in the physical world. In a way, I wouldn't be against the idea (maybe because I look at the internet as a source of utility and not to fulfill any emotional/social need) but on the other hand it would suck precisely because the internet can be quite useful as a tool, but its utility depends on having people around participating.

  • The source code is open and they are highly dependent on funding from users and NLNet. Lemmy's API is easy to replicate, so even if it's not so easy to say "just fork it", it would be pretty straightforward to have other projects implementing compatibility layers.

  • These siloed platforms are created to favor the companies, not the users. The web is open. We don't need one different browser to read long articles, write a trip blog, or to read movie reviews.

    The app-iification of the web is something that we should be eschewing away, not trying to replicate it because this generation grew up not knowing any better.

  • There is a fork called Incarnator which sees some occasional commits, but I think it's more of a maintenance project that an attempt to continue bringing innovation. I believe that my ADAPT project has learned all the lessons from Takahe and will manage to bring more exciting features.

  • Short of pruning the data every once in a while (and losing all history) there is nothing that can be done to optimize it. It may work as a proof-of-concept or if you want to run on your own, but I really don't think it is a good idea to promote it.

  • I'd say this is impossible, by design. The main problem of corporate social media is that it is controlled by an oligopoly, and we can not get this much concentration of power in a system that is designed to be distributed.

    The problems of Corporate-owned social media affect all of society. We need an universal alternative that can be a real threat to them and alternatives like the Fediverse serving only the fringes do little more than act as a "managed opposition".

    No need to be coy. What problems are you tackling? Where is the code? I agree with pretty much of what you are saying, this is why I started working on Fediverser, how about joining forces instead of coming with yet-another plan all on your own?
