  • Yeah, if you're going to use a phrase like this, you need to make your intention crystal clear. If this was an attempt to satirize old, racist tropes, casually using one of those tropes in the first panel of a comic with an unrelated punchline does not achieve that goal.

  • It just looks that way because they've got very narrow heads. Its much clearer on owls, which have very broad faces, that birds of prey have fully forward facing eyes.

  • My point is that they're entirely forward facing. Calling it a mammal rule isn't really accurate. It's about whether or not the animal needs to judge distance to attack. Sharks use their vision to scan for prey above and below them, but they use their other sense to attack. Hawks and cats have a significantly different sense of vision, but both need to be able to accurately judge distance with their eyes when attacking.

    Despite its taxonomic classification as a carnivoran, the giant panda's diet is primarily herbivorous, with approximately 99% of its diet consisting of bamboo. However, the giant panda still has the digestive system of a carnivore, as well as carnivore-specific genes, and thus derives little energy and little protein from the consumption of bamboo. The ability to break down cellulose and lignin is very weak, and their main source of nutrients comes from starch and hemicelluloses.

    While primarily herbivorous, the giant panda still retains decidedly ursine teeth and will eat meat, fish, and eggs when available. In captivity, zoos typically maintain the giant panda's bamboo diet, though some will provide specially formulated biscuits or other dietary supplements.

    They have developed some minor digestive traits that help them process bamboo, but they don't have the four chambered stomach of a cow or the extra-long hindgut of a gorilla to thoroughly digest plant matter. They have to seasonal migrate to get the amount of nutrients they need from young bamboo shoots and mature bamboo leaves. Their bodies could easily process a carnivorous diet, but their metabolism has become too slow for then to manage to hunt almost anything besides plants.

  • I don't think there's a hard rule you can put on it. Sharks are ambush predators, but they need a wide field of vision to scan above and below for prey. Monkeys are mostly herbivores or opportunistic omnivores, but they have forward facing eyes to jump through trees. It's just about what they animal needs their eyes to do, and forward facing eyes are mostly used for trying to grab another animal.

  • Pandas aren't true herbivores, they're more like vegetarians. Their teeth, digestive tracks, and eyes are all better adapted to eat meat, but they're too dumb and clumsy to catch any, so they've settled on bamboo. If a smaller, dumber, clumsier animal moved into their ecosystem, they would start eating it immediately.

    Sanders won several states. Kamala was polling so badly she dropped out before Iowa.

    I'm sorry that accurately remembering the 2020 primary is so upsetting to you, but Kamala did not win a single state, even as a VP choice. She dropped out in December of 2019. Voting started in February of 2020. Biden eventually secured the nomination, and on August 11th, the day that the final state voted, he named Kamala as his running mate.. Anyway, maybe before you jump into a thread and start calling people dumbasses, you should make sure that literally everything you're saying isn't wrong.

  • They didn't say anything about Trump, they said she had no shot of winning the primary, which is true. She was on track to lose every single state, including California, where she was a sitting senator. If you think describing polling data from a 5 year old primary is somehow saying Kamala is, "worse than Trump," you should log off for a while, maybe take a walk or something.

  • My old biology teacher used to say, "evolution only works as well as it needs to." Rabbits digestive systems are so inefficient they have to eat their own shit just to get enough nutrients. Hyena clitoris are so large they sometimes suffocate their offspring during birth. You're mouth is full of vestigial molars that will likely require surgery in your lifetime. None of those things matter, as long as your genes are successfully being passed down effectively

    Panda's have a digestive system that's not well suited to their diet, and they've adapted to that mostly through behavioral changes. Since they don't have kind of stomachs that efficiently digest plant matter (like a cow's four-chamber stomach), they're constantly hunting for different types of bamboo to get the nutrients they need. They eat young bamboo shoots of one species in the spring, then migrate to higher elevations to get the shoots of another. Both shoots lack calcium, so they migrate again in late summer to get more mature plants calcium-rich leaves.

    One weird physical adaptation they've developed is in their pregnancies. They mate in the springtime, but fetuses require lots of calcium to develop, so females embryos basically get, "paused," neither developing or dying, until later in the season when they have more calcium in their diet.

    Anyway, I guess my point is that evolution did fix the pandas digestive system to work with plants. It's just that, like most of evolution's fixes, it's a solution that's barely held together by duct tape and hope, and it could fall apart at any minute.

They're too slow and clumsy to actually hunt prey, so the only thing they can catch is bamboo (which is the fastest growing plant, so I guess that's something...sort of...). Anyway, the point is, Pandas as a species are from a family of predators, and they would absolutely eat meat if you gave it to them.
