The problem with communication protocols was never the protocol part. It’s the communication part. A few sad humans never wanted to communicate in the first place and managed to become billionaires by convincing the rest of mankind that being entertained is better than communicating with other humans.
Thank you for the info. I'll try a live USB with Kubuntu 25.10 or 26.04dev and check it out. Now that you mention that, the blurriness was indeed related with scaling (though not fractional).
The main one is the Wacom stylus & screen, on a Thinkpad X1Extreme. I tried Wayland from a live Kubuntu 24.04, and in settings there was the message "Unsupported platform detected. Currently only X11 is supported". At that point I didn't check anything else. I also noticed that the desktop and windows weren't so "crisp" as they were under X11, although I can't exactly explain where the feeling came from; probably I would have chosen X11 even if the stylus had worked.
I suspect that I can actually login on a Wayland session even now; I'll try it out as soon as I have time.
Or stylus users. If the stylus functionality won't be fixed in Wayland when this change happens, I'll have stop my regular donation to KDE and start looking for another desktop environment to support.
What's written on Wikipedia is no different from what's written on a wall in some city's street. No one knows who wrote it, no one knows how much of it is true. What's written is determined by insistence, not by agreement or expertise. Whether you can get something useful from its pages is a matter of luck.
I agree on your general point, but it also means that they produce OEM drivers that only work with a specific OS version. If you update, then you're on your own regarding those drivers. This is the case for instance for some touchpad/trackpoint or battery custom drivers available for Ubuntu 20.04 on an X1 Carbon, but not later Ubuntu versions.
Ah that's bad. I eventually managed to try out Wayland in the 24.04 live session, and it doesn't support my touch/pen-screen: ""Unsupported platform detected. Currently only X11 is supported". So I hope future versions will still offer X11 where Wayland can't work yet. Otherwise the situation becomes like for Windows, that a new OS version means you have to update hardware too...
lack of global hotkeys in Wayland, graphics tablet support issues, OBS not supporting embedded browser windows, Japanese and other foreign as well as onscreen keyboard support issues that are somehow worse than on X11, no support for overscanning monitors or multiple mouse cursors, no multi-monitor fullscreen option, regressions with accessibility, inability of applications to set their (previously saved) window position, no real automation alternative for xdotool, lacking BSD support and worse input latency with gaming.
