  • Good resources for setting up a domain name to a local Caddy instance

  • So right now im kind of doing option 1, but .local (I'll switch to .internal) and not using * ( which I will change and see if it let's me use the subdomains I configured in caddy that werent working before)

    Option 2 it what I considered switching too, I have adguard running on my router, but was testing option 1 when I decided that I might want to skip ahead to something more advanced. I really dont want to have to install certs on each device to get past the warning for https.

    Option 3 is on my backlog, I have a vps I planned on setting up pangolin on later down the road after I got some of my services spun up, but maybe I should take care of that now instead.

    Option 4 is something I briefly looked into before realizing its way over my head, and im also pretty risk adverse.

    Sumarry: so maybe option 3, and possible option 2 if its still needed when on my local network without having a client running.

  • Before I switched from proton VPN to mullvad VPN, I thought I remembered when doing research there was only a few providers that said they did no logs, and had proof either through 3rd party audits or shown they couldn't provide anything when court ordered.

    Does IVPN have proof they do not log? Because im in the same boat, I dont want my money supporting fascists, but i also dont know of any alternative to switch to?

    Besides switching back to proton VPN (which id rather not get into any controversy around them)

    • allow me to donate a set, reoccurring, monthly sum. I.e $20, 40, 60, etc, to 1 service
    • that service would then allow me to add "sub-services" like nixos, postmarketos, firefox, whatever, and it would split out my lum sum between all the subservices.
    • the service was 100% transparent, vetting, and vouched for, with paper trails showing the money actually went to the sub services and how much of a cut they take.
    • if it offered a local only program or app that would analyze what projects I used (its easy to forget about all the packages that linchpin everything we use) to help offer me suggestions on who I could donate to.

    Basically a Spotify for open source, but instead of basing it on my listen history and contracts with record labels, let me choose manually how my subscription payment is split out.

    I keep meaning to take a deeper look at open collective, but haven't found the time or had anyone else (donator or developer) share their experiences.

  • Learning one language makes it easier to learn another, so dont worry about which one you start with. Basically the "language" or vocabulary changes, but the underlying "grammer" (as in noun, pronoun, subject, adjective, etc) is for the most part universal. Like knowing what a library, functuon, method, class, loop, variable, etc will be transferable.

    For a project, I dont know what you do for work, but you mentioned vba macros in spreadsheet, so id recommend building off of that. As someone else with adhd, the more interested I am in something, the more motivated I am in pushing through roadblocks when its not instantly easy. So id recommend trying to automate some task you do manually for work, something you know a lot about and know what the inputs and outputs should look like, and write something for that.

  • I agree with another comment, it might be A/B testing. I get it sometimes (and sometimes not) when opening links from my RSS app to my Android Ironfox browser. I have ublock setup and adguard on my router.

  • The best way for me when i was learning the basics was to have a separate device to experiment and test things on, and not worry about having to wipe and lose anything, and any time I got something working right I would make the changes to my "main". But that's was a while ago and things improved since then, and also everyone learns different.

    So I would recommend trying to follow any linux communities on lemmy or reddit to absorb new info (a lot might be wrong or outdated), maybe follow some youtubers ( a few popular tech ones are making the shift to linux and learning from scratch too), and honestly even just memes will help. Just keep in mind that a lot of people state outdated opinions as facts, or repeat wrong info they heard from someone else.

    For more accurate but less hand-holding info, start trying to find good actual forums for Linux, like a disto's (spin or flavor of linux) forum or "discourse". As long as you read or search for things before posting, people will generally be nice and willing to help out. Just try to provide any info you can when you post, and don't have any attitude.

    Advanced and more technical info can be found on an apps or distros website or github.

    P.S ignore all distro recommendations till you get more experience, in the beginning the biggest hurdles will be switching from windows to Linux, difference between distros do matter but are much smaller than people sometimes make them out to be. You should stick with one, preferably whatever a buddy or favorite YouTube is using, and save distro hopping till later.
