    I have a trans family member. I am personally invested in their rights as a person be respected.

    And yes, transphobic DNC candidates losing makes the party less transphobic in the long run.

    We disagree completely. Up until 2 years ago I think we would agree that the DNC, for the most part, supported trans rights. When did we start seeing a handful of DNC candidates shifting on this position? When the candidates winning elections, the GOP, went transphobic. So the DNC losing more elections won't make them less transphobic, it will make them more. We've seen this in real time in the last 2 years.

    (Please don’t put words in my mouth and pretend I’m saying that means it’s a net positive that Trump won. You’re better than that.)

    WTF. Its a good thing I never said anything of the sort. I don't even think you need me in this conversation when you're the one putting words in my mouth, and then criticizing me for it.

    And frankly, if both parties turn transphobe, this whole country can burn to the ground as far as I care.

    You are the one advocating for the GOP and voting for GOP candidates directly opposed to trans rights. You are directly hurting my trans sister. You are the person with the torch setting fire to the country.

    I don't know your candidates, but if both candidates are transphobic in some way, can I safely assume that the GOP candidate is more transphobic or are you saying the DNC candidate is more transphobic than your GOP one?

    For me personally, a transphobic Democrat is far more dangerous to my safety and well being than any Republican. It’s more important to make sure at least one party isn’t transphobic than it is to win every election.

    Wait, let me follow your logic. Am I reading you right that you positing that voting for the GOP makes the DNC less transphobic?

    You're going to vote for the GOP, which by every measure, is the more transphobic party, as a strategy to try to reduce transphobic legislation being written into law? That makes no sense to me whatsoever. If anything I think it would make the DNC more transphobic because they see they are losing elections to pro-transphobia GOP candidates and the DNC would think thats what voters want.

  • There are better targets for the anger for not paying enough taxes:

    Alphabet (Google parent company) earned $132.17 billion in profits in 2025 and paid $26.656 billion in US taxes for an effective tax rate of 20.1%. Sure this could be, and historically was, higher before trump cut the corporate tax rate from 35% in 2017.

    Tesla, on the other hand at the same time in 2025, paid $0 in US taxes in 2025 on profits of $3.794 billion for an effective tax rate of 0%.

  • Google isn't in financial trouble from this spending. Cash Flow Negative just means in a specific period they're spending more than they bring for that period. Google and other tech giants have been sitting on mountains of unused cash at $242.5 billion for years. This is a rare time where they're finally dipping into it to the tune of $5.9 billion.

    The default Lemmy UI "front page" is posts that are "Active". First, try setting it to "Scaled" and you'll get much more variety of posts instead of just the ones with the most replies. You can set this as a setting each time you visit Lemmy, or edit your Lemmy profile so it defaults to "Scaled" all the time you visit.

    Second, start cultivating Lemmy communities you like. "Subscribe" to communities and block the ones you don't like. Your "front page" will have lots more content you like and far fewer of things you don't care about.

    Third, some poster are consistently too far away from from what I want to consume on the internet. You'll know them when you see them where everything they post something you wish you didn't have to see. Block these users and you won't see their posts or their comments on other posts. None of these change affect what other people see so there's not risk of harming others or censoring them for others. They are free to continue to be seen by whomever else doesn't want to block them.

    With these three changes I have found Lemmy to be a much more engaging place.

  • I guess I'll go against the common answer. I choose "customs".

    Learning customs requires vastly more time than language. Each situation would have its own nuance given the parties involved, the prior events, and the intent you want to communicate. Social class, religion, and history all influence customs. Dress, speech, body language, all are part of customs that are subtle and not necessarily written down to study.

    To be able to instantly know all the customs for every situation would be amazing! Language can be learned in isolation and with the instant knowledge of custom language learning itself would be significantly easier.

    No mention of Open Vehicle Monitoring System (OVMS) here? Its mostly focused on older EVs where the manufacturer has abandoned the cloud portal for remote management of the car. However, that's nearly the exact problem the article is calling out for other non-EV cars.

    Sustainable business is far less profitable than maximizing profits. The billionaires' goal is self enrichment irrespective of the impact to others. This is why they're not pressing the "small profits, sustainable business button".

    there are lots of factors. for example, unemployed ppl can consume less and pay less taxes, which is bad for the economy as a whole and can devalue the invesrments in all companies of a region.

    Why does a billionaire care about the holistic outcome when there is enough inside their zero sum game for them to still benefit the most?

  • We've sent probes to other worlds. There's a very small chance we accidentally introduced some of Earths microorganisms to other planets that would still be around in 5 billion years after the sun. We've sent all kinds of stuff to Mars which will still be around when our sun turns into a Red Giant eating Mercury, Venus, and Earth. However Mars will have courtside seats to the sun at that point and be baked in high intensity heat and radiation, so I wouldn't have much hope of any life we introduced there surviving.

    We've also sent probes into Jupiter. There its unlikely anything could live we brought, but who knows? Lastly we put a lander on Saturn's largest moon Titan. Its not very hospitable to Earth life there though. Its our best bet though. The only other chances life from Earth would survive is all of the probes we've sent out into interstellar space.

  • I can't think of any version of immortality that wouldn't eventually be a living hell.

    Being immortal doesn't necessarily mean you don't feel discomfort or pain. Even if you do have a version that doesn't feel pain or discomfort, you could still be trapped, unable to move, in complete darkness, for all eternity.

    Step 3. Hope that if people are given the ability that they can live without consuming anything

    If human immortality is widespread to a larger population, its even worse. People stop dying, but resources don't increase. Some versions of immortality also mean humanity becomes sterile. So the population never decreases because people alive today will still exist, but never another new generation.

    Step 4. Did i immortal so well now we are all going to have to figure out how to inhabit the interior of the sun.

    An immortal "human inhabiting the sun" will mean a human the enters the outer corona, but never having their flesh burn because of the magic immortality. However all your clothes would be burned off long ago. So it would be a bunch of naked immortal humans slowly descending toward the core of the sun eventually being wrapped around the dense pure-neutron core where the affects of gravity would be 100 billion times Earth gravity. You'd stick to it unable to move a single muscle. Matter would be pressing again you all over your body at that same strength. Eventually pure neutrons would encase you inside the core of the star. you'd be stuck in the solid heart of a star for all of eternity.

    If we had a larger sun, you might have had the chance to escape when the sun goes supernova and be cast out into the galaxy, but you've got bad luck to be stuck in our solar system and our sun isn't big enough to explode as supernova. Instead, our sun will eventually become a white dwarf, a small star slowing bleeding its remaining heat out into space. This process will take literally trillions of years. Eventually when that heat is gone our sun will be a black dwarf. We have no idea what happens after black dwarf because none exist because the universe isn't old enough yet! Our universe has only been around for 13.8 billion years.

    So I hope you enjoy your immortality stuck inside the heart of a cooling star unable to move a muscle with the rest of naked humanity mixed in with you.

    I'll be keep my mortality knowing I'll be happily gone in less than 50 years, thanks.

    Not positive, but probably never. The explanation is even more weird. Given 50 billion years, the Earth rotation would slow and would become tidal locked so that one side of Earth is always facing the moon. The other side of Earth would never see the moon. However, in only 5 billion years our sun will expand and engulf all the inner planets including the Earth and the moon.
