  • I know usa has bigger problem than guns like healthcare (bigger as it affects way more people than guns), my comment was only to answer to your why would they go after 3D printing.

    A violent place without guns Will always be a better place than with.

  • (european here) i can imagine that the gun religion in usa directed by nra and big manufacturer needs to have someone to blame to divert eyes from lack of real legislation over guns and what best to blame that a growing sector that could potentially affect their share of market in future. They could be scared from the fast development of 3d printing and the crazy power of innovation a community can achieve, they could be left behind just by the lack of innovation.

    Another way to say this: blocking consumer 3d printer is a way to reinforce their dominant position by ensuring there is not other path than going threw them and making sure their market share don't drop because of new technology growing/changing fast while diverting the real issue USA has with guns.

  • Nothing really new actually, this plugin has been there for some time.

  • You can find resources for each categories but don't think there is one that would cover everything and the reason is there is always several ways to do things and not one way for all.

    First you need to choose an OS. You have a few choices here, a good way to start if you don't have much knowledge on linux command, docker... is to use something like Casa OS, Zima OS which are much more beginner friendly, it basically has a store where you can pick what you need to selfhost. If you already feel more confident and want absolute full control you can use proxmox instead.

    Once you settled your OS, you need to pick what to use sleefhost image, music.... Here you have again several solutions, you can check immich for pictures, jellyfin for music/video, home assistant for smart home.

  • Mainboard and psu are the ones to take care the most but keep in mind that not all filament like to be printed in fully closed enclosure (without proper ventilation), PLA for exemple.

    One way to monitor and secure my printer is to use smart devices. I have home assistant running at home, my printer has an integration available and i can recover several printer informations like status, temps, printing time... and i have several smart devices (mostly zigbee) which i use to monitor and apply automation based on scenarios. (temperature sensor, smoke detector, camera, light, plug to power on/off printer). I can then create automation like "when smoke detector has detected smoke, turn off printer, then send picture to my phone and broadcast a message in the house...". I have maybe 5 different automation running for the printer but the possibilities are endless.

  • Various report of users and a video that explained the issue. Don't have sources now, it has been a few months

  • Be careful if you seal it completely, electronics won't be able to cool down properly, it needs some fresh air.

  • Make sure your printer is not on something flammable, have a smoke detector (are common practises for safety). Since the problem is about power draw, and heated bed is what needs the most i got a cool build plate so i'm now printing at 30°c instead or 60°c. Obviously, some could also replace the cheap component bambou has put in but i'm not confident enough with my electric skills.

    About the issue, i recall that quite a few A1 got on fire. Bambu denied there was an issue and said it was a user fault. Some guys pointed out a weak component that would just barely support the maximum load printer can use and ranked it as unsafe. No recalls as no issues for Bambu

  • A pi5 with 1gb ram will always be cheaper but that's not enough ram for your usecase, search n150 at Aliexpress, you can often find some mini pc for around 150-160€ on sale with n150, 12gb lpddr5 (or 16gb ddr4 sodim) and 500gb SSD. https://a.aliexpress.com/_EQ5k2Uu This one was 153€ couple of days ago. Thay are other Chinese brand like soyo, beelink, bmax that have similar hardware. They are not as good as NUC, but they do the job for way cheaper.

  • Home assistant is a beast, not sure openhab can actually match it today. Unless you already have a pi5 and a SSD (avoid micro sd card), you could consider a mini pc with n150 (or n100) processor. It doesn't consume much power (close to pi5) and it will be more powerful and more Ram which will be useful for immich.

    Start with zigbee first, much more mature than thread. I don't personaly use thread but i believe some zigbee dongle also can deal with thread at the same time.

    About the setup. If mini pc, you can use proxmox so you will be able to create a VM for home assistant and another one for immich.

  • To just store your printer there if you are not printing isn't big issue as long as you don't live in a too humid place, if I was to do that, I would leave printer in his original box to avoid collecting dust on it and would drop a few silicate bags. Two primary issues for printing will be to maintain your filament dry (enough) and warping due to the difference of temperature

  • What protocol do you use? Using ZigBee, my sensors (temp, leak, doors) last about 2 years

  • That might depends on how your AC is working, I recently did the same at my dad's house and run into issues because the temp control for the unit is reading from the remote. So when I sent infrared command to turn off unit, it worked as expected for some minutes then turned back on because remote sent back command as temp wasn't meet. Still need to do a lot of testing to find a way to make it work, might need to disable remote and use some temp sensors for the triggering part but not sure how that will work, might need to use some hysterisis friendly climate addon for that...

  • I totally agree with you, like always politician have an idea but don't even state how to realise it... So possibly this will actually never happen.

    One thing that come to my mind is that manufacturer could maybe use some kind of hash database of firearms related files. While printer are not very powerful, that's something that could be done on slicer but that would mean the death of open source software (at least in USA) as to implement this every manufacturer would need to force customer using their slicer. Also, wondering how much power demanding it is for printer to recreate solid object, could they just read gcode to analyse object? and since guns are not 25cmx25cmx25cm, it's not like this would take ages to analyse.
