  • When you say "nixos installer", do you mean the GUI nixos installer? If you have a github account, you can create a bug report. As a KDE user, this has never been a problem for me.

  • That's a meme response. I can snicker, but it really doesn't solve anything.

  • Development should really happen more in containers but I hate devcontainers. It's very VScode specific and any customizations I made to my shell and environment are wiped away. It has trouble accessing my ssh keys in the agent, and additional tools I installed...

I just wish nix/nixos had a safer solution for it. Maybe even firejail or bwrap or landlock or something.

We laugh about AI deleting all the shit, but every day there's a new npm package ready to exfiltrate all your data, upload it to a server and encrypt your home. How do you protect yourself against that?

  • Probably not. There must be something missing in your configuration. Do you have createHome = true for your user?

When facing issues on nixos, you can easily just share your /etc/nixos/configuration.nix + a description of your error + logs and it'll provide useful context for people. We'll even be able to spin up a VM with your config to see if the bug can be recreated.

  • Why has Lemmy had such problems with this and piefed, the new kid on the block, just makes it work? I've been subscribed to the linux experiment since I joined and it simply doesn't work. The last video I see here is from 2 years ago.

  • It sounds interesting but who in the world is going to write article in the abstract wiki? It doesn't seem at all accessible.

  • Why is it called fly by wire? Fly by chip would make more sense. The wire is connected to a chip, not to a mechanical system.

  • Doesnt Germany, like the UK have a formal and official petition platform? Petitions that reach the quorum have to be discussed in the second house of government. Stop Killing Games did the same.

This is a great ides, but why not use the formal channels?

  • How are you going to handle issues, releases, artefacts, CI, pull requests, and so on. Please dont say mailing lists. That won't make anybody but the minority of developers wet.

  • Windows realised that they hadn't locked in their users enough and hadn't built an ecosystem difficult enough to exit like the ego phone makers. My only hope is that they will fuck that up enough with their AI driven coding practices and agentic OS to drive more people to Linux.

  • I won't ever write zig but respect to the maintainers for moving to codeberg and sticking to their principles. If the nixos foundation had any, they would move too (but I guess fighting in the forums is more fun than moving).

  • In this thread:

    • users rejoicing
    • users who never donated a cent to krita or gimp shitting on it

As usual, the entitlement amongst users stays high.

  • Wich ones did you apply to? Just so that we don't recommend the same ones you've tried...

  • In fact, I would encourage more unsupported maintainers to do just that. Stop rushing to fix bugs for people without a support contract. Patch security flaws at a more leisurely pace unless someone is willing to pay for greater urgency. Take your time and enjoy your hobby more, since that is what unpaid software maintenance is. Collaborate with other people only so much as it brings you joy.

💯 times this. Pay or it will be fixed when the maintainer has time. They have no obligations to fix or implement shit. Pay up or square up.

  • In this thread: people who believe the myth of the safe C programmer. The one who has memorized the spec and is able to hold endless context in their brain while writing code. They themselves are C compilers.

  • Sure, if you compare it to a thinkpad for 1k. M1 Macbook pros cost how much when they were released? 2.5k? 3k? Of you're going to get reduced compilation times. But what exactly is it "paying of"? How is the calculation from time to money done?

"I can store so much stuff in my RAM, it'll pay back in 6 months". Such a random metric.

  • I learned to hate the Mac forced upon me for the time I used it, thank you very much. Fuck everything about those boots from the fruit store. Especially in a multi-architecture team, fuck macs.
