I'm trying to selfhost some Lemmy communities just for fun :)

Buddhist, researcher, FOSS, Linux, selfhosting enthusiast, plantbased, anarchism and MLM interested.

Trying to be nice. I really dislike the Reddit style aggressive comments. If you are rude I will block and ban you.

  • At first I liked that it was nicer and more intelligent but recently that hasn't been true. My current favorite thing is that it is selfhostable and many users do it.

  • As I believe with my cat, both we and they are lucky to have chosen us to go through this disease. He got a loving home. He must have felt very safe to sit with you such. And you got to take care of a special animal in need of love and care.

I’m so sorry! That is such a sad feeling.

  • I’m so sorry! My first cat had FCOV/FIV just as Covid happened in early 2020. His death really affected me but taught me a lot. I hugged him until the end. I know your pain.

Thanks for the reminder of impermanence and cherishing our family and pet family! I struggle with imagining my current pets’ future deaths.

I’ll add he is super cute! I can tell he was a very good boy :)

Since I saw someone else shared a cute photo I will too:

  • It's command line but super easy. You can add it to daily or every ten minute cronjobs. Easiest format is rsync -avz /from /to. If it is too another device rsync -avz /from user@ip:/to

  • More feature creep and things to break it?

  • File browser is easy for all of those minus syncing. You might also do rsync. Easiest solution!

  • Thanks for taking the time to write this! This is well written and you make some excellent points.

Hiding mod accounts names is a weird choice and not notifying bans if even odder. Wonder the intention?

You make a great point with feeds! I didn’t consider that.

  • I disagree. Especially on coms where one needs answers. But I want to support smaller instances.

  • The whole point of lemmy is decentralization. Not being run off by bad mods. I agree that a lot of big instances have rude admins and mods but this idea is for similar communities with similar modding. If the mods agree then what’s the issue? A lot of big instances communities have the exact same mods anyways.

An example for my use case is I want to support slrpnk and post on their selfhosting com but I don’t want only 1 answer. Federating my post to all three big selfhosting communities would allow more interaction while still being decentralized in the sense of not instance dependent.

  • Exciting! I’ll try to get my piefed running again then

  • This is great but I still don’t think it fixed the issue that both softwares have, what do you do about wanting to share the same content between multiple same named communities without spamming?

I still really like the idea that communities can choose to federate with each other. You post to privacy at ML and LW and it shows as one post in both communities.

  • Send it to your parents and work is what I do :)

  • NFT is a big red flag. Isn’t IPFS practically dead and only runs through one gateway so it very much can is and centralized

  • I use Navidrome and Jellyfin.

  • L for Linus

  • Hard to be too depressed with adorable cats :)

  • How many tb? It may be cheaper even within a year to just purchase another hard drive

  • The woods, clearly

  • Lol
