  • IKR. Those assholes that want to give everyone free healthcare and free childcare and free food. Fuck those cunts. Let's do whatever we can to piss them off it will be hilarious.

  • Yeah.

I'm in Australia, I suspect you might be also, but for reference a few months ago our centre-left party ground our centre-right party into the dust in a landslide election victory.

I suppose I agree that its not all bad news.

However, I'm gravely concerned about the US trajectory and I'm certain it will have an impact here sooner or later.

Right now our PM is trying to negotiate the current tariffs. The US will want us to increase military spending, and reduce investment in science and research. We might resist, but it's certainly pressure to move in the wrong direction.

  • I dont think anyone cares about money anymore.

They can see the problems arising from climate change on the horizon and they're creating a ruling class and a subservient class.

If you're part of the ruling class you dont need money.

  • I dont think that's it.

It's an overwhelming case of "got mine".

Like sanders said, being a GOP member just means staying in line.

  • Unfortunately I think Trumpism is lowering the bar. Maybe right now it's not fascism everywhere, but there's no doubt that on a decades time the world will be more fascist than it would have been without Trump.

  • There must be (or ought to be) a term for this type of conspiracy that requires practically all experienced professionals in a given field to be complicit.

You could convince me that one or even a group of researchers were acting with nefarious intent, but everyone? It's just an absurdity.

  • Sure ok but that's pretty meaningless at this juncture.

Rigged machines aren't going to save us

  • Good lord. I'm not having a debate about the adequacy of an analogy. Well done.

  • Like any analogy, it doesn't perfectly map to the complex issue being analogised (?), but it's not as absurd as you're making out.

The architecture for plugin support is not free. Even if no plugins are active the platform is built to support all the extra nonsense.

lighttpd is the leanest webdav implementation i can think of. Obviously it doesn't have sync and sharing and permissions, but it's an interesting point of reference demonstrating how over engineered nextcloud really is.

If you're a fan, and want all of this stuff bundled together then fine, have at it. As I said up top, I am using it but I dislike it immensely.

  • Those are add-ons.

Besides which, o365 is not a single self hosted php behemoth.

I'm loathe to extoll the virtues of 365. I don't use it and never will.

  • Oh please. AWD is not "better" 4WD. 2 different things for completely different purposes.

  • Sure that's why I drive my 4wd anywhere i want to go - i don't want or need 4wd but I can just not use that functionality.

Sorry what office suite is basic NC functionality that has been there for a long time?

  • Well if I uninstaller them what would i complain about?

  • Nextcloud isn't a 365 competitor?

It's filesync with contacts and calendar.

Even once you build in documents and spreadsheets, 365 at least has separate applications for that - its not a single overblown behemoth.

  • KeepassXC is the only thing that makes sense to me.

I don't want all my passwords stored with some huge target like lastpass or bitwarden.

Encrypted local (and synced) DB is the only way.

  • Kinda sounds awful honestly.

I do use nextcloud for my small team. It's the best of the selfhosted file sync platforms.

That said, it's obscenely over engineered.

Who ever wanted a file sync platform that also does calendaring and contacts?

  • Reminds me of this time last year when Trump was on trial for a half dozen things.

Everyone was all like "ooh it would be so undemocratic to try someone while they're campaigning".

Meanwhile republicans can just uncitizen anyone they don't like.

You can't win if no one is playing by the rules.

  • That's a pretty thin connection. If that's the requirement, more or less everything political.

There is no law banning dog walking, therefore any discussion about dogs is political!

  • We won the lottery on this. Had twins, 1 boy 1 girl at birth. They're too young to know if they're gonna be friends, enemies, (probably both?)
