  • I ended up in a similar place the first time I quit Facebook. When I went back, I did so far less and pretty much only from a desktop PC. It really balanced things for me at the time. I also hope OP gets what they're looking for.

  • Protip: they make little pocket notebooks that could fit in a back pocket. Maybe 10x5cm. You will need this because you likely don't realize how many times a day you whip out your phone to research a random thought. Those thoughts are valuable! Write them down for later. At least that was my experience.

  • I imagine there are also some low level cops relieved to see them gone but don't want to say so publicly. After all, AI is coming for their jobs too. Pretty soon buying a state patrolman a Honda Goldwing to patrol the highway will be an impossible sell when we could just strap a few more cameras to a pole or fly a drone. Everyone but the bootlickiest of the bootlickers will eventually hit their breaking point with this increasing public surveillance, just not until it goes poorly for them personally.

  • I degoogled (mostly) a while ago, but home assistant has a pretty configurable local voice assistant. If you have remote access to your server, I imagine you could cobble together a good keyword based personal assistant that sets alarms, turns lights on and off, and reads you an RSS newsfeed while you drink your morning coffee.

    We're truly on the technological downslope now. First it was all about the user and making software accomplish a purpose, then it was all about the user as long as it was profitable, now it's fuck the user - be profitable.

  • Others have mentioned Bazzite and Mint. I have used both. Bazzite is gaming focused, but, in my opinion, slightly harder to administrate due to the whole immutable/atomic thing. I went over to a buddy's recently who is running Mint. It's been a few years since I used Mint, but it was a great all around Linux system, doesn't have any of the Bazzite weirdness, and it was exciting to see it used by someone out in the wild (not in my own home).

    If you weren't a gamer, I would almost certainly recommend Mint. In your case, I would say try them both out, break them, push them to the limit and throw weird scenarios at them, maybe shut the computer down incorrectly a few times. See if you feel more comfortable with one or the other, then do a reinstall of the one you liked best after breaking them both. It is more work up front, but it's worth knowing you can maintain your system when it very occasionally breaks or has an issue. Above all, make sure you take regular backups. That way you can mess with stuff and not worry about whether or not you'll break something.

  • I want kids and I've been wrestling with the fact that I'm getting older and the US is only getting shittier. Some people my age have kids who are in middle and even high school. Over the years, I've also been told more than a few times that I would make a good parent. I just don't know if I have the energy left to do a good job raising a kid while struggling against an increasingly rigged and broken system. I already got a bonus family member (not a kid) who is related to my spouse and lives with us. This has cramped my bachelor style significantly and clearly moved me into the "head of the family" stage of my life. If I'm gonna live a family life, I would like to mentor someone else to reach for the stars. In the US, you're the odd one out if you don't have kids. That's a selfish reason to have them, but sometimes you just want to play on "normal" difficulty like everyone else. I grew up with a good family life and involved parents and I'd like to pass that on to someone with a few modifications based on my own experiences. I'm just gonna need some universal health care, schools where the kids don't shoot each other, universal pre-k through college, $2/dozen eggs, etc. Also a 75% discount and an assurance that I won't get surprised with a 2 for 1 deal would be nice.

  • Here's the answer I was looking for! I'm surprised I had to scroll so far to reach it. We are the source of most of what's wrong with the world so I'm pretty sure the rest of the animals would vote us off the island too.

  • We got busted by the janitor and yelled at for doing this at the community pool in elementary school. We never did it again, at least I didn't.

    I think it's all about that satisfying splat. The same reason my coworkers and I always wanted to throw a full 50lb soda bib off a three story building (those big bags they hook up under the soda fountain). Sadly we never got to do it, but the splat would have been awesome.

  • I majored in PHIL and took significant personal interest in it before that. I also deconstructed my faith in the 5 years prior to that. Philosophy asks all the questions, not just the ones that have immediate practical meaning or application or serve the will of those in power. Beyond that, it helps us develop better question asking and reasoning skills that are applicable to many other topics and pursuits. In some ways, philosophy is what education should be. It encourages you to discover and try to understand rather than just flip open your noggin on a hinge for someone to shovel in a bunch of junk for you to mindlessly repeat. If every school aged kid was introduced to philosophy the world would be a better place.

  • If you had to choose one place in the world to start from nothing and survive solo, where would you pick, and why?

  • It's a good answer. Hawaii came to mind for me too but then I saw Costco guy's comment. Hawaii is warm enough day and night, Winter and Summer. There's an abundance of biodiversity and you could probably hunt and gather yourself some food pretty easily. The part that's difficult is starting from nothing and being so remote because to reach any opportunity outside Hawaii you would have to scrounge up several hundred dollars for a flight, or if "solo" means you're the last person on earth, you'd have to get a boat or plane.

    It looks like Maui, Oahu, and the Big Island all have Costco, so it seems it was all a false dichotomy. There's one for each of us and an extra just in case!

  • Bicycling and partner dancing. I spend time in front of the computer for work and for fun, so I need some active hobbies to balance that out. Biking combines the thrill of exploration with the ritual of gear preparation and the endorphins and physical effects of exercise. Dancing is deeply perceptive on both auditory and physical levels. It encourages me to be social and approach people I don't know. Together, it's about the balance for me. If I loaded cases of beer onto trucks all day I'd probably be a professional hammock-er when I got home.

  • I don't see a ton of ads, but when they get through, it's often something I recently purchased. I'm pretty sure my bank or the merchants are selling my transaction info but why they want to advertise to someone who already made a purchase I don't know. It's not even necessarily expensive purchases I would research online (though it can be). I had it happen with a 50ml bottle of Vodka. I bought it and when I got home the ad-overlords started spamming me with ads for the brand.

    I was doing okay before AI replaced me. I wouldn't have bought anything I couldn't have paid for on the day of purchase but I'm glad that I didn't because unemployed me has to drive even less than work-from-home me did. Pouring $3k into my car would hurt, but not as much as buying a $40k mobile babysitting device that's going to surveil me everywhere I go.
