  • I’d argue that GPL is still counterculture, it’s just that permissive licensing is more common these days and both are conflated into single umbrella of free software. Permissive licensing culture made way into traditional free software spaces like Linux and we’re seeing results of that now.

  • Gentoo does a wild amount of work on $12k per annum but I don’t think $12m is that crazy - if it’s more than you can spend then you can pass it on to your dependencies. We shouldn’t expect open source contributors to do everything as a volunteer effort because then it becomes a rich person pastime. What’s infuriating here is that this $12m goes to people who aren’t exactly doing anything worthwhile.

  • Elementary is based off Ubuntu and I don’t think they maintain a separate kernel so the issue would likely happen on every other Ubuntu based distribution. Elementary is marketing itself as noob friendly because what differentiates them is their desktop environment which aims for a simplified user experience.

  • I’m not really interested in YouTuber drama, Gnome has always been a butt of the joke because it’s been built on accessibility principles but now it’s also associated with being anti-LLM so that probably brings in new haters too.

    From what I can tell by checking now, there’s been some conspiracy theories around removal of Sonny Piers from Gnome Foundation Board of Directors but the current state of this drama is that Sonny Piers has taken down his blog.

  • My code was scraped according to this website but let’s not kid ourselves that any kind of opt-out will prevent this. Any corpo knows that you can outsource all of your shady dealings to a couple of layers of third party vendors and pretend you didn’t know any better. It’s safe to assume that if you use an LLM that you didn’t train yourself you’re violating copyleft of some GPL project.

  • Why would you use XFS for those partitions in the first place? It’s not what it was designed for or used in real life and that’s likely reason this wasn’t discovered before. What I’m getting from a lot of those AI-assisted security findings is that they’re not concerned with a real vector of attack before making big claims in the media. You’ll probably be able to vandalise things with this exploit but „root privileges” is pushing it.

  • Last I checked it’s true that you can get framerate in the area of or even exceeding that of Windows. What’s rarely mentioned however is that frame pacing can suck (119 frames in 1 second then 1 frame in 1 second averages to 60 frames per second to give an over exaggerated example) and will contribute to stuttery feel despite adequate framerates.

  • I support very few open source projects because ultimately charity is not a sustainable way of financing things. It makes me feel like it’s up to me, an individual, to carry the weight of the world and ultimately too depressing. Fostering open source should be handled by governments, same as other stuff that’s done due to common interest, like schools and hospitals.

  • You can look at the tone of the whole post to understand where the author is mentally. You can also make an educated guess about who will want to work on a project that’s being coded with LLMs. If I’m wrong remind me and I’ll own it. But I don’t think I am.

  • Also, nobody actually knows if human intelligence is just finer grained stochastic prediction as well.

    I think some people are stochastic parrots and some are not. I think most of our true understanding of things comes from escaping our limitations. Why so many people want to become a stochastic parrot is beyond me though.

    Now to the future, because we’re not done yet by a long shot. The security reports keep rolling in. I’m working on a bunch of CVEs right now. Luckily I’ve been joined by some other very good developers with great systems development skills and security knowledge. Some of these people came to my attention partly because of all the rage happening at the moment, so I get some rage storm clouds have silver linings. Watch out for some credits for some great new rsync developers in the next release.

    The project is being taken over by vibe coders, yay.

    The shift to Linux is happening and every French government ministry is required to put its migration plan in place by the fall of 2026, including considering complementary software such as antivirus, collaborative tools, and so on.

  • PS3s had native Sony-sanctioned Linux support at the time - it was marketing for computational prowess of Cell processor. Funnily enough removing it as an anti-piracy measure was what prompted community to jailbreak PS3. Steam Machine doesn’t offer anything nearly as attractive, it’s just a PC and inference requires way more VRAM than it offers (8GB which is pretty awful for modern games too).
