It works for non amazon books at least last i tried. Works on library books...but that feels wierd. I have enough money to buy books now, so sometimes i just op for the real thing.

I have had luck reaching out to authors in the past. One even recommended yoho so that was funny.

Baen library was one of the first (older than amazon!) To let you buy and add ebooks drm free. And any format too.

I had some of thier books on an old palmpilot.

Something i have been foing for years in calibre is saving the de-drm version of all ebooks that i bought. And getting the txt version of the files.

The ebook format is basically a subset of html if you ever look into it. And as time goes on ebook readers have different ways to show these books. Most of the time, its great! Sometimes its not. Give it another 50 years and we will see what works and what doesnt. But i garentee at least the txt files will still work.

I didnt know what authors and publishers go though. Thanks for that lemmydividebyzero

To answer the original question, I would say...get a pihole or something that looks at the network! Its fascinating to see without a doubt what modern day computers are reaching the internet for. Since there is 1001+ Linux distros all I can definitively say is that some of the more popular distros take care of the nitty gritty at the cost of using their own servers for a couple of things. A vast majority of the time its not nefarious.

Is the voice AI?

Regardless just put pihole and/or a router/switch that allows you to see the network calls between a computer and the internet and you will get a better look at what stuff the OS is reaching out for. MS is pretty bad, but not as bad as some people make them out to be. Linux has a couple (mostly just NTP and internet checks). I havent done the check with Mac OS.

Theres online comparisons somewhere on ram/cpu etc... win 11 is VERY bad at 8gb in most cases. Linux at 8gb mostly fly. Hell mac os works well at 8.

Its just microslop doing their thing.

Same. Its somewhat useful on some very small scripting or tasks...but its mostly just to try out a new model or two. Its not really useful for anything big.

I will have to say....even my tiny models are about as good as Chatgpt/Claude/etc... which makes me think about how much people are spending on tokens regularly. I was able to get the same kind of python script started with my local tiny model that was comparable to the newest Claude code offerings.

Im planning on waiting 5 years to see if it will become a thing and be well supported. Ive been burned by experimental tech before. But I hope to see more of these kind of projects pop up in the future.
