  • Yeah, the British approach when faced with a Guerilla war was to round up EVERYONE living in the area, depopulating the entire countryside to remove the Boers' support network.Then they stuck the people in badly managed and badly supplied camps and gave only half (starvation) rations to the families who still had members outside fighting.

  • I'm on my way there but after 25 years of bathing my brain in substances it's not easy.I used to drink nothing but strong coffee and energy drinks and smoke cigarettes all day, then finish the day off with weed and half a gallon of beer.

    I'm now down to 1 cup of coffee in the morning and 2-3 nicotine gums per day. I've quit alcohol. So I'm at a point where I'm not slowly killing myself anymore. I tried to go zero substances recently but that killed all my productivity at work. I'll have another go at it next time I'm on vacation.

  • Millions are not a lot.

    I'd buy inner city housing complexes and transfer them to cooperative ownership, with all rent money going towards upkeep and a collectively-owned fund that will be used to bring more housing into the cooperative over time.

    Only the inhabitants collectively can decide what to use the fund for, but the by-laws of the cooperative will not allow selling of real estate or drawing from the fund individually.

    In the long run, that'll remove more and more living space from the predatory profit-oriented housing market and take financial pressure out of the lives of many people.

  • The advantage is that you can get a cheap laser printer.They'll happily print every day for years and cost next to nothing to run.They'll also happily print after you didn't use them for a long time.Ink printers are generally less durable, cost much more to run and their heads dry out if you don't use them regularly.Color laser printers are expensive, big, and the color isn't good enough for photos, only colored documents.

  • I work tech support. And I'm often working in weird or cramped places on site with my laptop.I hate using the touchpad! So I always bring a wireless mouse.It's a lot more convenient than a wired one.Also, I can connect the laptop to a TV and watch movies from streaming sites, using the mouse as a remote while I'm on the couch.

  • I was on a bicycle tour from Berlin to my home in the south of Germany.Started in early October, with two GDR army daypacks bungeed to my bike as panniers, a tent, a summer sleeping bag and no jacket.The first night I found out that was a big mistake, I got hardly any sleep cause I was freezing my nuts off.Next day I was sniffling and feeling weak.

    The second night I didn't get any sleep at all. I'd pitched my tent on the edge of a corn field.Which turned out to get harvested during that night.

    When I packed my stuff in the morning, I had a fever and realized I couldn't go on, so I rode to the nearest town and took the next train home. My condition quickly got worse during the train ride.

    Somehow I managed to make it to my house and collapsed in bed, where I basically stayed for the next three days.When the fever broke I went out to buy food, but my bicycle wasn't in the garage. It was just gone.I had no recollection of where I had left it, just a hazy feeling that I'd stopped somewhere in my home town before I went home.

    Never found it again.

  • Yes. I'm an IT sysadmin for the last fully independent local newspaper in my country.It's pretty challenging because a newspaper needs special systems that are a clusterfuck of tech debt that the suppliers don't fix anymore, since the entire industry is dying.
