  • I remember reading investigators on the case saying that it was indeed pre-recorded. Plus there's the fact that this happened in two different TV networks within few hours where they showed the same video - only that in the first incident their engineers were around, understood what was happening and managed to overpower the pirate's signal before the recording ended.

  • I mean, not that there have been tons of successive civilizations around here, so... And yet if that was the case, you'll need to take in account that oral lore may have had a hand in the names of places, so it's mostly improbable that a place has had completely different names with each civilization.

    (Edit: people downvoting/replying to this thinking I was talking just about the USA is hilarious - reddit syndrome much?)

  • I really wish we could actually "rename" places as their original indigenous names across all America(s). For example my country had an internal turmoil just to keep the original name of its capital city because we love our native people, and yet we keep the incredibly stupid name of "Land of Colon" (imho most probably the most stupid name of any country, ever) because fuck our native people.

  • My father was a farmer for pretty much all of his life (since he could work until he couldn't) and had a crop of cilantro at one time. I never knew nor heard about somebody saying that cilantro tastes like soap, never even imagined it was a thing. It was only until a few years ago when I started to get my nose into Reddit when I read about people saying that.

  • I switched to it from DDG which I found was enshittifying lately, but to be honest I don't really like it that much, just gave a bit better results than DDGs and has bangs, but the AI thing is absolute BS and there's no way to disable it without saving cookies on your browser.

    Now that I look at startpage again I'm thinking to give it another try but am not sure if it has bangs too and if you can set settings in their GET method as you can with DDG.

  • They should just talk wayland directly. Using GTK just for desktop integration is not what GTK is for. The friction will only increase over time.

    I recall reading a comment from (allegedly) a Gnome dev on Reddit a few years ago saying that Mozilla should port Firefox directly to Wayland (?) so to make it toolkit-agnostic.

    I don't know if that is actually a possibility, but that would be great. You can't use Firefox if you don't have GTK installed, not even an appimage of it - but apparently you can get stuff like Inkscape running without it just fine:

  • I know at some point in history there was talk about going to C++ but Linus brushed it off because he didn't liked it. This time he thinks otherwise.

    So trying to get Linux into another language is no new talk.

    And Zig is becoming a thing. I do not know if it will be ever suitable for such task, but it seems like moving on from C or complementing C's kernel development with Rust, Zig or whatever comes with the future is just a matter of time.

    It will not happen overnight as a fork will not happen overnight so the only way forward seems to be patience.

  • It's odd because from what I can gather from things like youtube it seems like woodworking is huge there (and they say wood is cheap there too), so I'd imagine there should be a considerable amount of people doing furniture.

    Contrasting to the situation here where people doing hand-maded furniture is lowering their prices so much trying to keep up with the ikea-type of shit (and of course doing things with superior quality).
