  • I think it's social conditioning and lack of mental health resources. Girls are strongly socially conditioned to "play nice" and get along at all costs, which tends to lead to more rules following. Boys are often socialized to suppress their emotions while at the same time are allowed to act out and encouraged to be tough and macho. The bad boy act is romanticized and violence is at best tolerated and at worst idolized.

    So you have men who never learned how to deal with their feelings who also are used to having a physical, often violent outlet because that's the only acceptable thing they know.

    And yay, new work boots! I just got new work boots too. They're the same as my old boots, because my old boots lasted me years of heavy abuse and were super comfortable but I didn't realize how much the tread had worn down on the old ones. The new ones are so much thicker as a result and the first day I wore I put them on and almost fell face first down the stairs outside my apartment at 5 am. I actually fell up the stairs a couple days ago and of course some guy I didn't know was right behind me watching.

  • If it won't cost you anything but your time and is going to give you peace of mind then it seems like a no brainer to me. MRIs don't use radiation so it's not like you have to worry about getting "too many" in your life, although even with CTs and X-rays I personally don't worry about my exposure because I've only had a few and it's so low risk compared to everything else in life that wants to kill me or make me sick.

  • Are you aware of how fucking finicky birth control is? If you're on the pill you have to take it at the exact same time every day and if you miss that time by just an hour it's not effective for the next entire week. So don't ever get busy and forget for an hour, or be unable to get to your pills because something else needed your time and pulled you away, or get sick and have to choose between delaying taking it because you're nauseated and might throw them up or actually throwing it up ending up missing that day. If you go on antibiotics it stops working. There's an entire list of other medications that interfere with it but doctors never bother to tell you when they prescribe them to you. A lot of birth control doesn't work if you are over 165 pounds, which they don't tell you, oh and by the way a fun side effect of birth control is that it can make you gain weight at a rate that should be scientifically impossible.

    But yes, let's blame the woman, of course she's just being a deceitful bitch.

    I challenge you to eat a piece of candy or do some small task every single day at the exact same time for the next 30 years of your life and never ever forget or fuck up or delay it by over an hour and then come back and explain how easy it is. Even setting an alarm, even planning your life around "I HAVE to take my pill at this time" it's damn near impossible because life happens.

  • Idk, idiot drivers are definitely an issue, but I feel like a lot of people refuse to teach their children basic safety skills because they believe they're incapable of possibly retaining any of it. I knew by early elementary school age to stay TF out of the road no matter what, and so did all the other kids in my neighborhood. We were also taught really young don't go into a parking area or near any of the parked cars in the neighborhood if the engine was running because the driver might not know you're there and even if they do there's always the chance of something like a foot slipping on a pedal and then you get pinned or run over.

    When we got a little older, like older elementary school age, and a little more responsible, we were actually allowed to play in the road unsupervised because that was the best space to play. There were never any problems because we always had someone watching the road and warning about approaching cars and we'd get out of the road.

  • When I was in college I was super stuck on a calculus homework problem. I worked on it futilely for hours before giving up and deciding to email my instructor about it in the morning. That night I solved the problem in my dream, and when I woke up I actually remembered the dream and it was the correct solution. My instructor thought it was hilarious when I told him about it in class.

  • The importance of a social safety system and a good (non employer related) healthcare system in order to have a productive workforce and society, and why everyone should have access to good healthcare, food, and stable, clean, pest free housing, regardless of their physical or mental ability to work.

    The way we treat our sick, injured, disabled and elderly is atrocious and we should all be ashamed that we let this happen.

    I work in EMS and the amount of people I've seen living in the most horrific conditions simply because they got sick or injured and are now permanently disabled absolutely haunts me. I've gone into places that I wouldn't even let an animal exist in and there are people living in absolute squalor. They aren't "lazy" or "looking for handouts" or any other shitty thing that people like to call them to other them, many of them simply had the misfortune to get sick or injured and not have a safety net in place. If you get disabled and aren't lucky enough to have people around you to help support you or haven't been rich enough to be putting money away to live off of for the rest of your life, you are fucked. I have no one in my life and I live paycheck to paycheck on a strict budget, and I see these people and know their life will be my future if I get sick or injured.

    Some of them were always going to be permanently disabled, and some of them could have recovered and lived productive lives except they couldn't access the care they needed because of cost and now they're living in shitty poverty situations, still unable to access what they need, and it's too late to recover.

    I could go on for a long time about this, and I could add in many other subtopics.

    On a slightly related note, I don't in any way shape or form believe that a person's life or value should be linked to the workforce or their ability to labor and I think that's a disgusting concept, but I could also frame a solid argument along those lines and maybe win over some hardcore capitalists who maybe wouldn't give a shit about people otherwise. "Hey those people you don't care about, if you invest some money to ensure they are as healthy as possible and are happy, they'll get back to work creating profit for the company and will be way more productive than if they are sick and unhealthy, which will be way better than spending money paying out disability for the rest of their life."

  • Yup, and then it became "I was able to work a summer job and pay for my entire tuition, why are you whining you lazy young kid", ignoring the fact that you literally can't do that anymore.

    I am ineligible for any federal or state grants. I'm an adult who lives alone, works full time, and pays all my own bills. I had to drop out of college because I couldn't afford the 20k a year tuition. The government told me that based off my income I should be able to afford to pay $39k worth of tuition and fees on my own, at the time I was making about $44k a year in total pay with OT. I guess I can just go live in a fucking box and eat out of the garbage while I finish my degree.

    Meanwhile my old boss, who is married with a kid, dual income making a 6 figure salary and owns a really nice house, gets over 10k a semester in grants to attend 2 college classes a semester, because having a kid and owning a house means you can claim those expenses. I can't claim my rent as a living expense on the FASFA, therefore the government assumes I get free housing somehow.

  • Maybe 30 mm across? Like I said, definitely not the biggest spider I've ever seen, I used to live in a house that had Wolf spiders (made me want to genuinely die every time I saw one, those fuckers are HUGE) but for my current apartment, that's a big spider.

    The two worst things about living alone are having to figure out dinner every single night and having to deal with my own spiders. The only other thing I hate about living alone is never having anyone to cuddle up with. Other than that, living alone is heaven.

  • I have arachnophobia and I've trained my cats to take care of spiders for me, since I live alone. One night I was up late, as usual, and around 2am I went into my kitchen, turned the light on, and the biggest spider I've ever seen in my apartment ran across the floor. The fucker was definitely not the biggest I've ever seen, but huge, furry, and fat for an inside spider. I went to go get my work boots to smash it, but before I could even move my cat came tearing into the kitchen, leaned down and swallowed it in one gulp. He didn't even chew. I was half disgusted thinking of that thing alive and wriggling in his stomach, and half so proud of him for being my hero and slaying the monster for me. He got tons of treats as a reward.

  • I never understood why they got rid of that. I always thought it was a cool feature that they could have really leaned into. I had a tablet with it and I never used it much because I don't watch TV, but it felt like something that could have been super useful to someone who did watch TV a lot (and I also had fun setting it up for my family TV and then casually sitting in the background adjusting the volume, changing the channel, and tweaking other settings and watching the chaos that ensued while I oh so innocently appeared to be oblivious and busy playing games on my tablet)
