Long term computer programmer, making my own library. American based. Far left politically. Promotes use of paper ballots. Follows news about environmental collapse, political corruption in my country, human rights, science and tech.

  • Yea, it’s nice; I’ve coded with it.

Rails just never hit the mainstream. That might be because it never had many powerful sponsors. There are some clever people and big companies that think it’s good to use. But I think the support is too scattered to attract an increase of use, so it languishes in the ecosystems.

And having hundreds of well maintained libraries will be the only way it can get popular now. And it cannot attract the new programmers in sufficient quantity to do that. And it cannot increase its sponsors until it has it.

So, it will remain a very cool thing most people won’t use

  • Ruby on Rails was always fringe but will always have its advocates

  • That’s because this news site is owned by a multinational company, which owns several other publications. They sell advertising and not reform

  • Hah I learned c++ in the 90s and never felt shame for messing up an allocation.

I think when this happens, I have a puddle of memory, the spilled ram “lubricates” the pointers, which often rub against each other. The wasted memory acts like oil does to a rusted chain. It’s helping push the program through the finish line.

Yes, I am having fun here

  • I am worried about food in the countryside too, if anything breaks down too far. Most rural people in the USA have lost the skills to grow their own food. And most farms in the USA ( that are not owned by companies) are now owned by families that inherited them, and they don’t have as much knowledge as their grandparents, and would have difficulties .

So, yea, food insecurity if many parts of those very convoluted supply chains have trouble

  • The global economy is new, so much has changed

4 generations ago most of the food that people ate grew within 20 miles, now a good chuck of my food is grown on four continents in dozens of countries.

This and every single thing in my house and car has supply lines stretching over a million miles when the travel of every single item, and their materials are added up. Literally, tens of millions of people helped make my items

Banking is literally hundreds or thousands of times more complex than in my grandfather’s time.

And my entire career is based on technology and infrastructure I read only hints about in science fiction books as a kid.

  • Not op, and as far from an economist as possible. But I think there has never been a situation like this, ever, in the entire human race.

I have no clue what will happen but I deeply feel most will have wrong predictions

  • Japan only attacked the USA in 1941 because of an oil embargo by the USA

  • It may be difficult to self host for many years without significant downtime. I have some repos over 20 years old, and have gone through several boom and bust cycles myself.

  • In at least one airport they are checking ids and being more of a threat

  • People supporting him is not nearly as important as who can stop it in the next day

  • This is a stated intent to destroy, or set in motion events that will destroy, much of the oil and power infrastructure in several countries .

I really hope this is only a manipulation of the markets , because otherwise things will never be the same.

Americans have a duty to make this not happen

  • Meh… 200 is just the starting asking price; will be impressed if it goes above 10 trillion- with inflation

  • Rip

  • Here in my area, of rural east Texas, the only safe shelters for dogs, that I know about, are already at capacity and cannot take new ones.

I’m all for finding homes for stray dogs or even having people feed community strays.

But life is complicated and there are no nice options to deal with some dogs who pack up and become a menace.

  • All the major companies have too many ghosts, and will do things I do not like.

I really want to support more ethical organizations

  • I wonder if there ever be a manned flight again using this very flawed system. Or at best they will have that near earth flight when too many things go wrong

  • line cook would in a decade lifetime
