  • I also just work it out in my head. There are certain "landmark" numbers and tricks that I use to save time. For example, 9 times any number is easy: multiply by 10 and subtract once. x11 is similar. Same with anything close to a perfect square. (7 x 8 = 7 x 7 + 7)

I think that memorization was important to achieve speed before phones/calculators. Nowadays, I would consider memorization an obstacle to understanding.

  • Every word is made up. The fact that, centuries ago, the word solipsism was brand new did not detract from its value.

Having personally felt the sensation that is now called sonder, i am happy that someone coined a word to describe it. Like solipsism, sonder relates to theory of mind, and now theorists in that field have a concise tool to refer to something that used to take a couple of sentences to describe.

Without neologisms, a language is dead.

  • If I am not in a position to give i look the person in the eye, smile apologetically and say, “no, sorry.” I try not to ignore them and i am never rude. No one has ever reacted badly.

  • It used to be the people’s responsibility to hold politicians to account. Nixon didn’t resign because he felt bad - he resigned because his support collapsed. If you voted for a congressman or senator who refused to impeach Trump, you voted for making politicians above the law.

  • So you go to the pharmacy and they give you a pile of adderal and, like $2000? Way better than socialism.

If y’all thought you had an illegal immigrant problem before, lemme tell ya…

  • Dear Daily Beast:

Please pause all Trump Approval Rating articles until his approval hits Ceaucescu levels.

Then, by all means, loop me in! Live coverage would be best.

Sincerely, Every person who didn't vote for Trump

  • Canada, too. For the last two years, Canada has entrusted sensitive statistical information to Microsoft. We should be treating MS with the same skepticism we currently reserve for Huawei.

  • Donald Trump, probably: “Hey, who planted my dick in all these underage girls?”

  • Trump who?

  • Yes. My son has a genetic disorder and receives care from my country’s socialized medical system. Donald Trump has threatened to annex my country. I would not be able to afford the treatments that keep my son alive under Trump. I boycott American goods like my child’s life depends on it. People need to understand that Trump’s threats towards the USA’s former allies imply deadly consequences. Fuck Trump, fuck maga, and fuck anyone who supports them by buying their shitty goods. Unless you have absolutely no choice, don’t buy American.

  • Yep. My country just had an election and our far-right party promised to destroy our public broadcaster if elected. It would have left us with nothing but American bullshit and billionaire-owned media. Thankfully, they lost. But just by a hair.

  • Haha you almost tricked me into googling « volume of an average coffin in m^3 » on my work computer

  • 8 cubic metres should do

  • Trump needs ‘space’ for a specific purpose: avoiding the consequences of his crimes. Republicans are always ready to give him that space.

  • Came here to vote for the Lift and also ask whatcha got against gorillas?

All my bros in primate marketing were saddened by your comment.

  • Yes, but also for the better in some cases. There are things about kids today that make me shake my head, and other things make me glad.

I think with good parenting and reasonable limits, the Internet can be good or at least neutral for kids. It’s bad for anyone to be always online, but within the parameters of our current society, it’s probably bad to never be online.

The problem, as it has always been, is that many parents either suck at parenting or are too busy to do a good job. If every parent was good, we wouldn’t need a minimum age for alcohol, for example. These restrictions are meant to prevent the worst harms in cases where the parents can’t or won’t do a good job.

  • I love German legowordmakingkraft.

  • Well, I guess i am going to be regularly updating the metadata on my most recent selfie.

  • Yep. You pirate one movie, you face criminal charges. You pirate the entire corpus of images on the internet, you got Forbes Person of the Year.
