    To answer your question, though: no. Some people are doing GREAT. It may not be a majority of people, but anyone who was rich in 2015 is now super rich. The super rich are now obscenely rich. Even a majority of the moderately well-off - e.g. people who own their houses outright or people with >3 times their annual income in investments - are doing pretty damn well. That is part of the reason that Trump, no matter how vile or incompetent, never dips below 30% approval. People will overlook all kinds of evil when their bottom line is improving.

  • Harder, but not impossible. I canceled apple music, Amazon prime, Netfilx, audible, and Youtube premium. The hardest thing to replace has been audible, but I go to the library more.

  • Yeah, similarities abound. I don’t know what everyone else is talking about.

    In a single year, Trump attacked Venezuela and Iran (among others), starved people in Cuba, and threatened longtime allies with invasion. His military is murdering people in the caribbean for the crime of looking suspicious. His paramilitary is rounding up people on the basis of race and putting them in concentration camps deliberately designed for cruelty (remember him gloating about alligator auschwitz?). He uses vile and dehumanizing language to describe anyone who doesn’t fit a narrow gender binary. He threatens reporters and uses his thugs to deplatform critics of his regime. He has overseen the erasure of any accomplishment achieved by people of colour from american history.

    It’s like Trump is absolutely dominating an “Act Like Hitler” contest and stupid americans fall over themselves to say “you can’t compare him to Hitler” because it’s 1939, not 1945 yet.

  • I deleted my accounts and came here. Occasionally, I would still browse reddit - but I haven't posted or commented since that day. I am not alone, either: the quantity and quality of content on Reddit has noticeably declined. I used to go up to 10 pages deep (250 posts) during a browsing session; for the last year, I have been seeing repeat shit on the second page. Reddit gets boring after, like, 15 min tops.

    I can't use their app: it is terrible. Seriously, the person who designed it should take up farming. The new reddit browser page is just as bad. While typing this response, I navigated over there in another tab to confirm how bad things have gotten: I could see 2 posts. Two. Fucking. Posts. before I had to scroll (which I did not do, by the way). Reddit, get the fuck out of here with that bullshit.

    Now that I can't browse old.reddit.com without an account, they have lost even the meagre advertising revenue my viewing generated.

    Reddit did not survive the API protest. It's bleeding out, slowly. For me, Lemmy is the front page of the Internet now.

  • Qobuz has a big library and I can almost always find what I am looking for. I also tend to listen to whole albums, so I like the way Qobuz is organized. They have human-curated playlists for discovering music, as well as a 'similar to this' section under each artist. Really, their service is very similar to apple music, but I wanted to avoid American services.

  • The Internet is too useful. Email, online banking, and the ability to find reasearch materials are essential to me.

    However, i have abandoned all social media except the fediverse. I only use youtube for specific instructional videos - not for entertainment. If i am looking for fun, i look somewhere else. One exception: Qobuz for music (they are a French streaming platform).

  • You are right. I didn't mean to be cavalier about heroin addiction - I was just being a smart-ass.

    In fact, I don't mean to be cavalier about gambling addiction either.

    Here is what I really mean to say: when you learn about gambling through a mathematical perspective first (as I did), it NEVER seems appealing. All casino games are rigged so that the house wins most of the time. Sports betting is similarly biased to ensure that the only participant who routinely profits is the bookie/betting parlour. For me, knowing this takes the fun out of it. It's like reading the last chapter of a mystery novel first, then trying to slog through the book anyway. And what a spoiler: in the end, you're gonna lose.
