  • But they could only do that for the office of president+VP, a national office. They don't have conventions for choosing candidates for any of the other offices--those are decided in the primary, period.

Also because of the backlash from thatm after similar issues in previous years, there was some reform to reduce the power of the superdelegates:

Superdelegates would now be prohibited from voting on the first ballot at the National Convention if their votes could be influential in the outcome.4 (However, if their votes could not sway the nomination, superdelegates would be permitted to vote on the first ballot.) If no candidate received a majority of pledged delegates on the first ballot, superdelegates would be allowed to vote on subsequent ballots.

    See https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7786873/ for more details.

  • I didn't expect you to glean that from "Huh?". That was only my response to your saying that Democrats "formed another party" because that never happened. I apologize about including all the other stuff there. I got confused about who you were originally replying to since your post happened to be right under my post in my view of the thread, and thought it was to me. Sorry for the confusion!

  • Oh that--yeah that was dirty politics! But that's not what I'm talking about. That was about the internal leadership positions of the state's Dem party apparatus. What I'm talking about is voters voting in elections that send the winners to elected office as state or federal senators and representatives, governors, mayors, school board members, etc.

So, like what we saw with Mamdani. He ran for office, meeting the legal requirements to do so. The Dem Party couldn't stop him from running for Mayor. But they did whatever they could to make him lose the primary election, mainly by spending tons of money campaigning against him and for Cuomo. But Mamdani won it handily anyway. Even then, the Dem party didn't even try to help him win the General. They couldn't stop him.

This could be repeated in other places, other elected offices. Especially the House. And winning seats at the State level is just as important.

  • You apparently don't understand what it means to primary a candidate (from the left, in this case). I'll explain it for you. The way to get more progressive people in Congress is to primary the existing congresspeople with a more progressive candidate.

Whoever wins the Dem primary in this district will win in the general. It does no good to wait until the general to just vote against the republican and get Jeffries again. You have to find and support a good progressive candidate who is to the left of Jeffries and beat him in the primary. If that doesn't happen, no one is going to even bother running against Jeffries because they know they won't beat him in the primary. People have to support support support an opponent.

This is how magats took over Congress. They primaried the hell out of the "traditional" repubs, from the right. They won some of those primaries and lost some. Then sometimes they still lost in the general if their candidate was too far to the right for their district. But they didn't care because they still won in a lot of others. They kept doing this every election, and the more power the right got in Congress, the more trad repubs just dropped out and didn't even try to win re-election. Once it gets going it snowballs.

There's no reason the left can't do the exact same thing to the Dems as the right did to the repubs. Well, unless it's already too late now that maga controls the government, that is.

  • New York 8 you know what to do -- primary Jeffries. Start looking for your candidate now.

  • Dear Rest of the world: I think you're still in denial and need to understand some things.

There are three main factions in the US, two of which have actively taken a side: Pro-trump/Maga and Anti-trump/anti-fash (because this is way bigger than just trump). The third group is staying out of it and consists of the apathetic("I'm too busy just trying to get by"), the dual-haters ("Democrats are just as bad so fuck everyone"), and the frightened targets who are lying low.

    1. When you say things like, "you sacrificed children for your 2nd amendment, this is what it's for,now is the time to use it" you are talking to the Magats. They love guns and the second amendment but they are the PRO-trump faction--they aren't going to go against him, they love him. The Anti-trumpers are not the gun nuts, though some of them have been acquiring guns recently out of fear.
    2. The numbers are against the Anti-fash faction: There are a lot of magats/maga supporters, more than many want to realize or admit. They do not live in the same reality as the rest of us. They watch and listen to pro-fash propaganda from Trump, the media, their religious groups, and now the institutions of government itself. They believe it and believe in it. Anti-trumpers are in the minority compared to the magats and the third group. Looking at protester demographics, a large percentage are older/retired, which doesn't help in a general strike. These numbers will likely shift toward the anti-fash as things get worse, but it hasn't happened fast enough.
    3. The entire republican party apparatus is completely under trump/maga control, and it controls the entire federal government and the majority of state governments. The Supreme Court majority is 90% in agreement with their agenda, so the regime can do whatever the hell it wants with impunity. And is.
    4. The magas have taken control of the election process in many States. We don't know how free and fair the 2026 elections will be. We can be sure that by 2028 they'll have even more control over the election process in more states than they do now.
    5. Trump will invade Greenland, at least if Europe and NATO don't make it clear they will go to war against the US to stop him and I've seen nothing but hand-wringing and "please don't talk like that" from them so far. Trump is all in on the "Sphere of Influence" worldview with Putin and in that worldview USA gets the Western Hemisphere. Europe and Canada: Stop wishing and waiting for American citizens to be able to depose this regime and start preparing for what you're going to do about the US.
  • You're confused. The people you're talking about, the ones armed to the teeth and justifying gun deaths, are the same ones who voted for Trump and love what he's doing. They're giddy with joy about it. Why would they use their guns against the very government they wanted and voted for?

  • FediFollows has a list of hand-curated accounts you can search or browse by category: https://fedi.directory/

Browsing your instance's local timeline or the global timeline will give you plenty of posts to read.

Remember that you can also follow hashtags for things you're interested in, so you'll get posts that contain those hashtags in your Home timeline. That's a good way to find people with similar interests. (when you click on a hashtag to browse, you'll see a "Follow this hashtag" button)

There's also FediGroups.social, a server where there are accounts for interest groups that you follow just like you would any other account. When you post on the topic of interest, you mention the group account and it will automatically boost the post so that it appears in the timeline of everyone else who follows that group account--and vice versa, you'll see the posts from others who mention the group.

I'd start with just following some hashtags and accounts you find on FediFollows, then once you start seeing their posts and the replies, you'll find more people.

edit: I had forgotten one other place you can browse through categories to find accounts: https://communitywiki.org/trunk

  • Yeah sure, sure. Let me know if anything actually happens instead of all this click bait dontchafeelgoodnow BS.

  • Same fake troll account that gets posted here all the time. Will people ever get it--This account is NOT a real maga who ever voted for trump. Their posts are all anti-trump and never anti-dem/liberal--they just want to make it look like a magat regrets their vote so lefties can gloat and feel good.

  • They put this book in comic book form, read it to Donald while he looked at the pictures, and he's totally on board with it.

  • But it did achieve the actual goal, which is that it created a cloud of confusion where a lot of money was moved around and huge amounts wound up in the private pockets of oligarchs, who laughed while hundreds of thousands died.

  • I think we should just keep the floppy disk symbol at this point, because it doesn't matter what it was originally based on or whether that exists any more--everyone knows what that symbol means, and it can't really be confused with anything else.

There's no point making an icon that looks like any other particular kind of storage device since those are changing all the time. So we either have to pick some real world thing like a safe or warehouse or grain silo or whatever. or invent some completely new symbol that's not related to anything and then everyone would have to learn it. Which takes us back to just keeping the floppy disk symbol.

  • This isn't some sudden new thing. Tyson has shut a bunch of its plants down (at least 8 or 10) over the last 2-3 years. They still have over 100 left, it's not like they're going out of business or anything.

  • She needs to stop buying so many pens pencils, and limit her kids to two or three dolls, they don't need more than that. (yes Mangolini did say that regarding people upset about prices)
