  • I don't exactly get what is even the selling point of the "federation" for something like fanfic. Since it's read-only consumption, isn't that just as simple as keeping a web archive / mirror? You can just have a mirror tool use the same general system as AO3 and only mirror the stories you want. Heck, if push comes to shove you don't even need all that, you just need curl / wget.

    Not to mention, it gets into thorny author / writer community issues, such as if a user wants to delete / abandon their work. If I want to make sure I can preserve a work I can already run a local mirror or save a local copy, federation only offers weal points on that front if someone else can (under their own rules) remotely delete what I have archived. It's literally federation with DRM. Don't we have hate DRM?

  • Doesn't need to be OC-only for that. Can also allow CC0 or any CC-like license adequate for the purpose (can't be Non-Derivative, for one) or any publicly referable license that explicitly grants remix.

  • It has never been a “legal headache”, more of a bit of additional work for distro maintainers (to keep codecs separate from the rest of the distro) and a tiny inconvenience for users (they had to click an additional button after installing the distro).

    Was that ever? Whenever someone whined about codecs back in the day, I would just install mpv or vlc (which were and are in most official distro repos I know of) and call it a day.

  • That only says when a new given model is released; not whether the model can use data that finds today yesterday on the internet to fine-tune, which is the current issue. If you have two secrets, and an internet thing guesses both of them, it's not irrational to suspect there is a leak (or a "leak") the internet thing is grabbing from.

    Don't even try to explain what the fediverse is. At best, note it's something like "the old forums from the 90s" or "some communities that affiliate with each other". They can get the broader understanding by experience and experimentation later, if they dare, and it's going to be a far more intuitive understanding than if we try to essay upon them.

    I'm asking for citation on the idea that it's not possible for the model to have been trained on that data from the day before if it was already readily available for them.

    But also, my main draw from this, is that the simplest solution to analytics is to just not need to profile people (let alone your interlocutors) in the first place. Just like with traffic and transportation problems.
