I'd appreciate it if everyone could just stop burning fossil fuels, please. Thank you for your cooperation.

  • My opinion is that it's divisive.

  • TIL there's a Swedish website called fishbase that has info about all kinds of fishes.

  • Sure. Why should the third car on the train follow the cars ahead? Break free from the track, accept the bribe, jump the rails and chart your own course.

  • I'm not sure why msn.com exists at all, but in this case it's republishing this from the bbc: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c39r7p47wzgo

Stupid headline, but otherwise just a perfectly normal story about the latest campaign of censorship to stop Chinese people expressing any dissatisfaction with their government and the attitudes it wants to promote.

  • Peter Thiel: "Do not defy the emerging machine intelligences or they will punish humanity by summoning another Greta Thunberg. Meritocracy demands that the computers be our masters, just as I am yours."

The ruling class talking like this does make the apocalypse look like a reasonable alternative.

  • Didn't you guys get Raptured the other day? Oh man, it was incredible. Guess you weren't Godly enough. Heaven is even better than they said it'd be. So long, suckers! I'm off to smoke a blunt and play some poker with Jesus.

  • The bluesky system isn't completely without advantages: It's much more convenient if what you're looking for in a social media service is all the data collected neatly in a central location so that it can be used for bulk AI training input or mass sentiment analysis.

  • A hundred million people will be born, a hundred million people will die, the world will continue to turn.

  • I remember when I wanted Mozilla to do that, since they had the organizational might, the money, and it fit perfectly with their mission when they created mozilla.social. On the one hand, it seems slightly less ideal to have the same organization that develops mastodon also providing hosting for it. On the other hand, they probably have a better chance of doing it well.

  • The FCC does for example prohibit "obscenity" — not profanity — on cable. No doubt it is mentioned somewhere on their website.

  • I still have a laptop with a tiny shrunken Windows partition on it in case I need it for some reason, but I've not actually booted it since installing debian. I can't be bothered to figure out how to clean up the bloat, disarm the telemetry, avoid the online MS services, block the ads, dodge the bugs, wait for the updates, get used to all the various stupid ways the UI has changed since the win XP I was familiar with, et cetera.

Using Windows these days is just way too much work, I don't know how anyone even does it.

  • I habitually throw random spelling and grammatical mistakes into my posts and comments all the time, to make it less likely that anyone can fingerprint my writing style and thereby dox me. That is the only reason for any such errors.

  • There was that one opinion poll where they went around asking everyone if they approve of keeping children safe.

  • Rice and beans curry: Pinto beans, basmati rice, diced tomatoes, chopped spinach, garlic, cumin, coriander, butter, habanero sauce

Cook the beans for however many hours. Add the rest of the stuff plus a little less water than you'd normally need for the amount of rice since there's some in the tomatoes. Bring it to a boil, let it simmer for however long it takes your rice to cook.

  • Just guessing, but I suppose it could be cloudflare "verifying" the web browser by subjecting it to all manner of abuse to confirm that it is worthy. Disabling your ad-blockers and such, thus leaving yourself open to all its probes and getting its fingerprints all over your browser's insides might be what's expected of the user here.
