  • The shitty engineering competition is fierce among American automakers.

    Couple of runner up ideas that I've personally encountered:

    • Connect every climate control damper to the modulator with a thin piece of brittle plastic that will break after 10 years, requiring removal of the entire dashboard to repair. -- Ford, 3rd Gen Explorers and Lincoln Aviators (2002-2005)
    • Place the distributor -- which happens to be very sensitive to fluids -- immediately under the water pump so when the water pump bearings inevitably fail, the distributor gets wet and is destroyed. -- GM LT1 Engine (1992 - 1997)

    I remember working on the first Toyota I owned and thinking, "Wow! These people really put a ton of thought into where everything is located. This is nice." We've had a Toyota as the primary family vehicle since.

  • If you build a factory someplace, the factory consumes a lot of resources and can be a nuisance. But in return, it provides jobs; at the very minimum. Going beyond that, usually someone in the corporate heirarchy is smart enough to realize that building good will with the neighbors is important and they encourage the employees to give back to the community to that end.

    The actual impact may vary but if nothing else, symbolic gestures that say, "we know our presence here has an impact and we want to make sure it's a positive impact as much as possible." tend to go a long way in terms of winning support and acceptance from the community.

    Data centers consume lots of resources and can be a nuisance. Unlike other operations, they provide very few long term jobs and give basically nothing back to their host community beyond that. They take far more than they give back. If the "geniuses" who run these tech firms spent less money lobbying politicians and instead offered to pay for the college tuition of every student who successfully graduated from the local high school, they would probably get a very different reaction from the public.

  • After reading Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, Teddy Roosevelt sent government agents to inspect the Chicago slaughterhouses. They conditions they found were worse than the book described and that was after the slaughterhouse owners found out government agents were coming and had their factories cleaned from top to bottom.

    Some of the stuff described in the book was just plain nasty so how it could have been worse is beyond me.

  • One time an acquaintenance told me that they were drinking raw milk and that it was very expensive.

    Later, I relayed this story to my wife who scowled and said, "Gross. When I was a kid [dirt poor in the rural USA], we would buy raw milk from the dairy farm down the road because it was cheap. I would never drink that stuff again."

    Becoming a fad pretty much drives up the price of anything. So if you're drinking raw milk, you're playing Russian Roulette with bacteria while getting ripped of.

  • CB traffic can be entertaining at times. Especially the trucker drama near bigger cities. I used to have a CB in my car. One time near Chicago, this guy is hogging a channel for like 20 minutes, ranting about the impending "apocalypse" or something like that. Finally someone else seizes a brief moment of dead air, "Buddy, if God were merciful, he would end the world right now so we wouldn't all be stuck listening to your stupid ass."

    Made me laugh a little.
