  • I’ve been diehard anti-Apple for anything but their mobile devices (iPhone, ipad) for most of my life. Overpriced, underpowered. Now I own a MacBook Pro M4 and I just can’t get over how good it is. What a turnaround their change to Apple Silicone has made, it’s actually wild to me.

    MacBooks, specifically, are still expensive but actually value for money now.

    They’re referring to an old controversy that was a mixture of bad decisions and conspiracy. They’ve now linked an article to the outcome of it. I won’t cover the whole thing but Apple “let slip” and “admitted” to slowing down old phones. This obviously feeds into the planned obsolescence conspiracies but at the time it wasn’t exactly hidden, Apple (one of their higher ups though I can’t think of who) said they were doing it.

    The real issue was that it was implemented without transparency. The point is the device underclocks to prevent unexpected shut downs which makes it slower as a trade off for stability. Devices still do this, but it’s now shown in the settings and warns that the battery needs replacing.
