  • Or whatever your local gym costs.

It's usually low enough people can't be bothered to cancel.

Alternatives - community center gyms, work gyms, temple gyms, etc

There is a gym in a public park near me that is $2 per year, yes it's a government project, but there are options!

  • Money doesn't motivate commitment, social obligations do. Go to the gym with a group at a specific time, or with a trainer; not disappointing your friends/trainer will keep you on time far more then "wasting $10 a month"

  • Tldr: it's a get up and move alarm. So that the worker doesn't sit at the desk all day

  • (You're linked post doesn't address any of my points, and just repeat yourself, but okay fine)

Okay, if I understand that post correctly, you want direct democracy to determine moderation in a community.

How do you prevent brigading? What about a community talking about sensitive topics, like diet and exercise? Or vegan versus carnivore? One side's going to have more people than the other, and they can moderate the other into silence?

I think it's an interesting experiment, just like craigslist used to do, or slashdot with metamoderation.

If you build it, I'll give it a shot

  • Tldr: you are not buying a phone, you are renting it from them.

You have to use their external service to unlock the bootloader, up to one time per year. No more.

  • And who do you propose has the job of moderating the moderators? Whoever that group is, same problem... instance admins, and if you don't like the instance admins... build your own instance, with better rules, etc. Turtles all the way down.

You vote with your time and attention, if your participating in a community you endorse it. If you want to change the community you can, as above. Wishing, or externalizing, your desires onto other people's behavior (the lifeless moderators your negging in the above comment) will not be effective in realizing the change you want to see.

And if the response to that is ‘woah, woah, I don’t want to do all that work’ then… clearly the moderation isn’t that bad

if the only people who can moderate, as you posit, don't have a life - implying you can't moderate because you do have a life... then the moderation isn't bad enough to motivate you to take on responsibility... so its good enough.

  • You are 100% responsible for where your vehicle is moving, that includes any blindspots. If you have a blindspot you MUST check it before moving into the space. So turn your head!

Sit in your car, physically, in real life. Have a friend take a bunch of traffic cones, or trash cans. Look forward, don't move your head, using your mirrors only. Have your friend walk around your vehicle, putting down a cone when you can't see them, and another cone when you can start to see them again.... If there was any point where you couldn't see your friend, that is a blind spot which you MUST check.

  • The correct way to vote against bad moderators and community rules is to RUN YOUR OWN COMMUNITY. Make it a better place, moderate it better.

So bad moderators are ALLOWED to persist because nobody has stepped up and made a better place yet.

And if the response to that is 'woah, woah, I don't want to do all that work' then... clearly the moderation isn't that bad

  • First - It might help if you don't call people assholes.

Run your own instance, see who is down voting them, then ban them from the community you moderate.

Alternatively turn off downvotes in your Lemmy client

Wrt downvoters, it's not just misswipes, there are a handful of voters who downvote many things, some of them just don't like me as a person, or don't like ideas I talk about and now don't like me as a person, I suspect a fair few I miscommunicated with and they think I'm a terrible person and now they down vote everything I post. Shrug. It's social media.

It seems like most people downvote as a sign of disagreement, or disliking.. so when I posted a review of a paper looking at vegan approaches to treating insulin resistance... The carnivores downvoted me because I mentioned vegans, and the vegans downvotes me because the paper was not promoting veganism but working around it's limitations.... Massive downvotes on a scientific paper. Direct democracy of ideas does not lead to civil discourse. example

As a individual I don't care about down votes. As a moderator, trying to grow a community, I see downvotes as negative growth, a chilling effect, discouraging others from posting or participating in the community. A community first needs to be a safe space for a topic, have engagement, and allow for constructive dialog - if it devolves into downvoting fights and name calling, its not a nice place to be.

  • It's about capabilities. If you have the ability to censor, then the censorship laws require you do so.

  • The flat earth is supported on the back of four elephants, who in turn are standing on a giant cosmic turtle that is flying through space.

It is speculated the turtle is looking for a partner. When that happy day happens, that will be the big bang.

It is of critical importance, therefor, to know the sex of the giant turtle.
