Scott Adams died today. I want to acknowledge something complicated.
He always felt culturally like family to me. His peaks—the biting humor about corporate absurdity, the writing on systems thinking and compounding habits, the clarity about the gap between what organizations say and what they do—unquestionably made me healthier, happier, and wealthier. If you worked in tech in the 90s and 2000s, Dilbert was a shared language for everything broken about corporate life.
His views, always unapologetic, became more strident over time and pushed everyone away. That also felt like family.
You don’t choose family, and you don’t get to edit out the parts that shaped you before you understood what was happening. The racism and the provocations were always there, maybe, just quieter. The 2023 comments that ended Dilbert’s newspaper run were unambiguous.
For Scott, like family, I’m a better person for the contribution. I hope I can represent the good things: the humor, the clarity of thought, the compounding good habits with health and money. I can avoid the ugliness—the racism, the grievance, the need to be right at any cost.
Taking inventory is harder than eulogizing or denouncing. But it’s more honest.
"Unlimited" PTO, from an employee's perspective, is an obvious trap that borders on a scam. Everyone knows that, practically speaking, there can't really be unlimited PTO. When a company says it has unlimited PTO, what it's really saying is "we won't tell you the limit". That makes taking PTO a fearful thing, which is probably the whole idea.
The briar mesh is via peer to peer Bluetooth / wifi connections but it is a mesh via briar message passing
In more technical terms, each forum/group/blog has a distribution graph where the nodes are subscribers and the edges are a subset of contact relationships (specifically, the subset that have chosen to reveal the subscription to each other).
So if your friend group is at a concert and the internet is down you can have a forum where y'all call still communicate, with the caveat that only people in the group will mesh/proxy messages once in range.. the benefit of this is that nobody outside the group can see the message activity, if one person makes it to the internet all messages will sync and when they go back to the concert the offline members will see internet messages.
That is only applicable in the factory farming context, which I've already said I agree with you, all industrial farming isn't sustainable.
Seems like we mostly agree on things. Nice to meet you on lemmy, enjoy your lifestyle. I'm glad your getting the outcomes you want on a diet you found for yourself.
As for the other aspects - the ruminate methane cycle is a historic and carbon sequestration positive cycle. Factory farms are unsustainable but ruminants are a necessary part of soil health and in their natural pastoral setting are not a source of ecosystem harm... in factory farms I also include industrial plant agriculture too, importing fertilizer and soil destroying monocropping isn't sustainable.
The kg of grain needed to equate a kg of meat in nutritional value comparisons are crazy! https://hackertalks.com/post/5606539 i.e. if you wanted to eat 100% of the daily recommend nutrition intake eating only Liver - you would need to eat 21g (0.7oz). But with refined grains you would need to eat over 12,000g(26lbs) per day... - These numbers are based on absorption into humans and not raw values measured in the food
as a full time carnist - I'm not desperate, I don't see it as unethical, It's not that I don't care about science and health but the data I've found does not support the plant based movement, I'm open to new data but not propaganda or low hazard ratio epidemiology
As a long time user of BSD laptops (apple) I've never had one surprise me when the screen was closed. FWIW I never buy these bsd laptops, they are given to me by $current.employer for work.
Graceful like closing a laptop and putting it in a backpack only to have windows refuse to shutdown and become a heater until it cooks the battery and ruins the screen....
I've acquired 4 sets of diagrammatic chess sets as of today! Western, japanese (x3)... i just need to find a sticker set for XongQi and I'll be all set.
There are many different types of chess out there, and as a game tourist I want to make things easy on myself. Chu Shogi has 21 different symbols for example, it's going to take a minute to memorize that, and good luck convincing someone else to memorize it to play a few games.
