  • At a party for international students, Eberhard met Sao Kya Seng, an engineering student from Burma who attended the Colorado School of Mines. The couple married on 7 March 1953 at the home of a friend in Colorado.

    Following his graduation, the couple moved to Burma. Hundreds of people had gathered at the port of Rangoon to welcome the couple as they arrived on the SS Warwickshire. It was then that her husband revealed that he was the prince of Hsipaw, a princely state in Burma and close to the border with China, which he had previously concealed from her.

    As someone from Colorado, I can assure you that the most astonishing part of this story is that an engineering student at Mines went to a party and met a girl.

  • I remember when Facebook used to just show your friends posts in reverse chronological order. You could react to stuff in real time and it felt great. People would do stuff like watch sporting events and TV shows live and then react with all your friends online.

    Then it changed to just pure alogrithm garbage filled with ads.

  • Our bonuses are tied to Copilot adoption rates. But it's not able to do anything useful for my actual work, so I have to use it for shit like "Copilot, take this emoji and make it holding a cartoon knife."

    Real glad my children won't have any water for this.

  • Beat meat, oh it.

  • I hate that we've had to change this calculation from a billionaire to a trillionaire. Both are fucking disgusting numbers.

    Also, I swear to God if anyone mentions compound interest I'm gonna strap you to one of Elon's exploding rockets.

  • And by "punchline" you mean "Solid Snake's absolute dump truck of an ass".

  • Here's an NPR article on it: https://www.npr.org/2026/06/30/nx-s1-5827039/supreme-court-campaign-finance

    Backed by the Trump Justice Department, they contended that the only justification for imposing a fundraising limit on parties is to prevent corruption, but they maintained that there is no evidence that the law has prevented corruption.

    We had the world's richest man purchase his own government organization in the last election, but somehow we're not worried about corruption?

    Dude went a few SECONDS over his time and they arrested him. Even when he said he was done speaking.

  • This is actually very common across businesses. My company actually has our bonuses tied to AI adoption, so we have dashboards showing people's AI usage. Other major companies have done the same, which lead to the practice of "token maxxing" where people were using AI to make more AI calls to boost their numbers up.

  • The autism is off the charts

  • Sometimes Lemmy posts line up in perfect coincidences and it freaks me out a little.

  • The problem with AI is that they cannot increase the prices enough to be profitable.

    I saw something about the SpaceX IPO that said for it to be justified at that price, everyone on earth with some sort of money (they defined it as earning at least $14,000/year) had to become an xAI consumer and spend $28,000/year. Seems reasonable /s

  • I was talking to one of our cloud architects at work yesterday. They did a test and just ran in "asdf" to a chat prompt, and were able to trace the costs. It was 12 cents.

    I could totally see AI costs getting out of control very quickly. Doing something like a Copilot formula in an Excel spreadsheet is easily going to run up hundreds of dollars of costs eventually.

  • While working on some client code, my coworker and I came across a case statement that said something like

    if myBoolean == TRUE
    then blah
    else if myBoolean == FALSE
    then blah blah
    else if myBoolean is null
    then blah blah blah

    Ever since we've always laughed at the "trinary bit".

  • There seems to be a pretty strong correlation though

  • Yeah, that doesn't sound like Roku's fault.
