  • What's hilarious is that all feels like bottom of the barrel stuff, like we should just be doing that stuff by default.

  • Not sure if you really want to know, but a Google paper is where transformers (backbone of LLMs) were first mentioned (2016 I believe). Google initially used transformers for translations and eventually search, but OpenAI experimented with them for text generation (gpt 1+) eventually leading to chatgpt.

  • I feel like a majority of tech has been in this rut for a while. CPUs, GPUs, audio, wifi, 4g VS 5g, screens/tvs, etc. all seem to provide the most incremental upgrades each iteration. For a while phones seemed to be making leaps and bounds, but feel relatively the same generation to generation now.

I think the main area I feel like I've seen some movement is battery tech. Some new materials and better/longer batteries are making some movement, but tech hardware feels relatively static the past decade or so.

  • That's the whole point of science - Why is this the way it is?!

  • I feel like that is very much the case, and yet its horrifying that it seems to work. Like, how does the average American hear horror story after horror story and not care. Each incident just makes him look worse and worse to me.

  • I've found in higher education that many programs that act as diploma mills charge a lot because they can. They know the students are just looking for the degree and that the school is probably their only choice.

  • I've downloaded some 4k content to do side-by-side with 1080p and it's a struggle to notice the difference.

  • The issue is more that there aren't rules. Given there are billions of parameters that define how these models work, there isn't really a way to ensure that it cant produce unwanted content.

  • Yeah, I believe there has been a report of at least one completely empty performance. Additionally Philip Glass canceled his Premiere of his "Lincoln" symphony because "the values of the Kennedy Center today are in direct conflict with the message of the Symphony.” - Source

I think Trump is shutting it down to prevent more stories of how quickly he's ruined this institution for the arts. Yet another loss for America.

  • Usually when polling data is released they'll have info about the political affiliation of voters. I don't know about this election, but many of the special or off year elections since Trump have shown a mixture of lower republican turnout and a higher percentage of republican voters voting for democrats.

But for exact numbers you'd need to look into the elections. The Virginia state elections would probably be most telling as they do elections on odd years, so it wasn't a special election and was for the whole state. Virginia is also a "purple" state and ended up flipping republican to Democrat majority.

  • Yeah, given seems Trump hell bent on devaluing the dollar and destroying global trade, stagflation seems most likely.

  • The alarming element is that a judge had already rejected the charges - source

As has been seen repeatedly with this administration, they will keep harping on the DOJ to do illegal things, like with the Comey case where they illegally installed an AG cause everyone else wasn't willing to touch the case.

  • Assuming you still have a job/income.

  • Actually the last admin to go after gun rights was Trumps first term where he said, "take the guns first, go through due process second".

  • Yeah, grandma is into some messed up stuff.

  • If their is high inflation (higher than the CD), then CDs are bad. Your money is locked in and losing real value over time due to the CD rates not being high enough.

Thats why I said it depends on what you are trying to defend against. What's hard is the economy is teetering between recession->low interest rates and high inflation. It seems like the Fed has gotten inflation under relative control, but bond sell offs would probably trigger rising bond rates (as the US has to make bonds more appealing), which I fear could lead to inflationary pressure in the US. However, given Trump it's hard to know what he'll do next so maybe diversification is the only thing to do.

  • It depends on how the devaluation occurs. If it's high inflation, then CDs screw you over in two ways; fixed rates and time locked.

  • Maybe not the worst game, but notable for being somewhat misleading - Mario Is Missing for the SNES.

If you're not familiar with it, it's is an educational game where you play as Luigi and walk around random cities asking questions, which is very different from other Mario games of the time.

  • Except for the 25th you have his cabinet turning on him first, and that's a big deal. If his cabinet doesn't have faith in him, I would suspect that the house and senate would see that as a big deal.
