  • What would realistically happen if universal healthcare went into effect in the US and healthcare was no longer tied to jobs?

  • Lots of people would exit the traditional job market, millions would start small private business. Pay would go up both because of the healthcare savings to companies and because people would stop working shit jobs for shit pay just to keep health insurance.

    It might also lead to a massive recession as for profit healthcare providers and services last l lay off workers and go bankrupt.

    So mixed bag probably good overall for workers, very bad for capitalists. But there would be a massive labor disruption and lots of people would be on the losing side initially.

    I would support a transitional system where every say 5 years we lower the age for Medicare access so we gradually ween off the old system and the healthiest most profitable pool stays in the old system the longest.

    It still screws over the next generation which I don't love or think it's fair but the ACA created a system so entrenched I don't think there is a way to roll it back without causing pain.

  • So I have both Rackmount Server and Mini PC's running in my lab, and it really comes down to what do you want/need.

    Mini PC PRO:

    • small size
    • quiet operation
    • low power, low heat
    • limited remote management option with vPro

    Mini PC CON:

    • limited storage options
    • limited ram
    • lower thread/core counts at lower TDP (often 35w)
    • limited expansion or no expansion

    Rackmount Server PRO:

    • offer expansion
    • offer redundant power
    • lots of RAM
    • lots of cores/threads
    • lots of PCIe
    • lots of networking
    • IPMI (remote management)

    Rackmount Server CON:

    • lots of noise
    • lots of heat
    • lots of power use
    • takes up way more space

    I think the little Minisforum MS series offer the perfect balance of mini PC with server like options. They give you 4 built in network ports 2x 10g and 2x 2.5g which is perfect for most applications IMO, they are available in both AMD and Intel flavors. With the one open PCIe slot you can add an external SAS card and then just use a SAS enclosure for disks. I currently have USB HD's plugged into my mini PCs and its not great, they dont get enough cooling, and I live in fear because they are on cheap wallwart power supplies. It is working and for the most part has been.

    My Rack configuration has been stripped down massively and now its just a single 2RU and Dell 1RU that is a low spec storage server only. The 2RU has an AMD 3900x w/ 64gb and 16gb MI25 card so I can tinker with AI, the Dell is just an i3-8gen with 32g and 4x 12tb drives.

    The Lenovo's are both i5-8gen with 32gb, same with the Dell mini PC, the Minisforum is an MS-A1 before they had the MS-A2 with better networking and PCIe. The Lenovo's do have upgraded networking so I can have 4 network ports per box, 2x 10gb, 1x 2.5, 1x1g.

  • Intel, owns x86, AMD owns AMD 64. So to manufacturer a compatible x86-A64 CPU you would need to get licence.

    Which they won't give you since they don't want competition.

    There is a 3rd x86 license out there that was owned by Cyrix who was purchased by VIA and now Co owned by a Chinese company.

    Intel and HP CO created IA64, and Apple, IBM, and Motorola Co created the Power architecture.

    Part of why arm is used in everything is they license the crap out of it. And RISC V is fully open not requiring any license which is why it's rapidly growing in popularity.

    Short of that have a friend with one show up and do something crazy like pull a 2nd row seat out with the car seat still attached and blow her mind.

    A maxed out Odyssey or Sienna will have more luxury than any similarly priced SUV and it will get better mileage and do more.

    60k gets you a basic Chevy Tahoe, or top tier Odyssey.

  • They're are times when I don't even need 10ft lumber or 4x8 plywood but I buy some just to rub it in while an f150 is trying to figure out how to strap theirs down.

    Toss on a tow hitch and boom even more practicality. What's that, an Odyssey with 6 kids and a trailer full of camping gear?

    Need to borrow my riding lawnmower? Sure!

    The only reason I'm seriously considering replacing mine is because Honda can't seem to make a range extended plug in version.

  • I will salute and recognize any other man driving a minivan particularly a Honda Odyssey. They know real practicality, and value. Chance are also good that they care less about their image than the do about being useful.
