  • What's the most unforgivable sin done in media that you're still bitter about?

  • Was going to comment that the ending of the TV series basically prevented the show from having long lasting cultural relevance. If it weren't for the current spin off, I think people would have forgotten about it completely.

    Totally didn't think about blaming George RR Martin but you're totally right about that too.

  • Since you're using a laptop, I'd recommend some less demanding games. To check if your laptop can run specific games, use this site here. Below are a list of some I think you should be able to play:

    • Stardew Valley: one of my absolutely favorite games ever. There's so much to do and you play however you want. There are also a ton of mods for quality of life improvements, graphic changes, and expansions
    • Portal 1 and 2: super fun puzzle games with a great story and memorable characters
    • Skyrim: there's a reason this game has become such a meme and had been released on every system for the past like 15 years
    • Fallout New Vegas: this might be optimistic to run but it's a great first person role playing game set in a post nuclear war apocalypse
    • Terraria: like a 2D Minecraft that has a simpler crafting system and more boss fights. I actually prefer this to Minecraft
    • Celeste: fun and challenging platformer. You will die a lot but the revives are so quick and the controls so smooth it isn't too frustrating when you need to start over
    • Balatro: card game where you make poker hands to attack your opponent
    • Slay the Spire: another card deck building game but you use your cards to take turns attacking your enemies

    There are some online games you could play too, but for beginners I would avoid them since the communities can be toxic. However, if you don't mind, you can try out League of Legends (will run on a potato), Rocket League, or CS GO.

    There are also emulators you can download to play old-school games like classic Pokémon or Mario. There are too many of those to list and it's a lot more complicated to download and install. So I would recommend checking out videos on how to do that and what games/emulators people recommend.

  • Been playing video games pretty much all my life. Like with all forms of popular entertainment, there are so many genres that I'm sure there's something out there for you. If you want, I can offer some suggestions based on what devices you own and what you're interested in.

    Other than that, learning to cook new recipes is always fun and pretty much essential to live haha. I've tried a few Ina Garten recipes and they've been relatively easy and tasty.

    For more general advice, you can view popular communities and join those since they're more active. I think that's the thing I miss most about reddit was that niche subs had more activity.

  • I love my screwdriver set from ifixit. Not exactly tech itself but I've had it for years and with light use it has lasted pretty much perfectly. The 64 bit set has had every bit I've ever needed so far. Only downside is that the base is a bit short and stubby so it doesn't always fit. It does include a rubber extender but that doesn't work as well in my opinion.

  • My dad recently passed away suddenly but there's a saying he used to tell me that has helped me through the grieving process. He used to always say that life has yin and yang. That we couldn’t feel rested if we didn’t know exhaustion, fullness without hunger, or happiness without sorrow.

    Having this perspective has helped me accept that all of the joy, laughter, and warmth he brought me has to be balanced with the sadness I feel when he's gone.

    You don't have to use the exact same analogy but I think the general philosophy is helpful.

  • My father passed away recently and his wife who he was separated from did not want to relinquish her rights to plan his funeral. Up until last Friday she had been respectful of what my brother and I, my dad's only biological children, have asked for.

    However, on Friday she published the viewing and funeral dates on Facebook without consulting us. They're on days my brother can't come home since he's working out of the country. When my family asked to change it, she said she had formed a committee for the funeral made of my dad's close friends and to ask them to change it. Of course, she only did this to avoid responsibility for the date.

    When I called one of the men on the committee and gave him a list of reasons to change the date, he basically said the plans were set and the notifications sent out. I replied that nothing was set in stone and that we could re-upload the obit. I further explained that my brother and I were hurt we were left out of the funeral planning and that it didn't have to be this difficult since there was availability a few weeks after the selected dates. His response was, "It's not. Just go with the flow".

    I was so stunned I didn't know how to respond. I couldn't believe the audacity from him saying this was not a difficult situation and for us to just accept their decisions. In the end, I told him that it was hard enough dealing with my dad's death without all this added stress of being left out. I didn't want to be overly rude since they could easily change their minds and cremate my dad without telling us anything.

    TLDR: Brother and I were left out of the funeral planning for our father and when I asked to change the date for my brother to be able to attend, I was told to "Just go with the flow"

  • Recommendations on games in which you don't play as the "good guy".

  • The GTA series might be a good example. All of the protagonists of the games commit exceedingly worse crimes as the game progresses but they're made to be sympathetic since they just want success in a world with not much other opportunities.

    Games with karma systems may work as well if the bad option isn't overtly evil. I'm thinking games like Dishonored, Fable 3, Undertale, or any Bethesda game.

    Anti-hero protagonists like Kratos from God of War, Arthur Morgan from Red Dead 2, and V from Cyberpunk could also somewhat fit the bill.

    Edit: just watched an Outside Xbox video that summarizes a few games with just this premise.

  • Lights Out is an oldie but a goodie horror short. Could do without

    the goofy creature reveal

    at the end though.

    Curve is another really good short that builds a sense dread and hopelessness. No cheap jumpscares, overused tropes (looking at you overly exaggerated smiles), or complicated lore. Just good old fashion universal horror.

  • Shows are easy. There are a decent number od good ones on Netflix. Jigsaw never said to watch a new show so that leaves a lot of options available.

    Now if he told you to pick a Netflix original movie that he would enjoy and hadn't seen, that's a lot harder.
