Because the rule of law is, that if you commit crime x you get punishment y. Lowering salary is not a regular punishment. If he would be fined with paying a fine the amount of his salary that would be ok with me. I'm not saying this man doesn't deserve punishment. But if his punishment was torture i'd also call that unfair.
Rule of Law means equal punishment for equal crimes regardless of the person committing them, so he should get the same punishment as someone who doesn't work at ICE.
This is so stupid, he does bad things on X and then as punishment they lower his salary? Not that i really care what happens to this man but this doesn't sound like a fair system to me. Either he is guilty and should get a fine or go to jail, or he is innocent and goes to work (however evil that job is) and gets paid like usual.
Would be cool if there would be a study on this, what amount of emission is saved by handing out ozempic and the likes and whether that is a good way of spending money aside from the health benefits.

You could definitely be right. I believe current day US behaves a lot like 1938-ish Germany, which makes that my expectation on how we will look back on this time is influenced by how we looked back on ww2 in the first decades after it ended. The current regime could easily take another route than Hitlers Germany did.
My cynical take is in 20 years you'll have a day of remembrance and in 80 years your grandchildren will have official apologies, unless this current administration ends doesn't get thrown out within 5 years - then it will take even longer. My less cynical take is that these people aren't losing their lives or ability to see because they want official recognition or honour, they want freedom because that's the thing really matters. I do agree though, once the freedom (and rule of law) is back, these people definitely deserve some kind of official recognition or honour.

But unrest in Iran, Russian imperialism, Chinese suppression and Israel killing Palestinians has sadly been the status quo for the last few decades. I interpreted batshit crazy as very different than it was before. But you're right, there is a lot more places where life has gotten harder.
