  • Lol, who is the target audience then? It’s certainly not regular people. They will never take apart their computers. The Framework is 100% marketed at tinkerers and DIYers. (It’s literally called the DIY edition when you buy it.)

    I’m not a computer repair person. I have repaired my own computers, but that’s not my job. So I’m not sure if that’s what you meant, but no, I’m not a professional repair tech.

    I don’t own that ASUS. I own a Framework. I regret buying it. It’s absolutely not worth the extra price. I’ve already had to buy a new battery for it after two years, because they use cheap, shitty parts, despite charging out the nose for them. So yeah, I wish I had just bought an ASUS.

  • I’ve fixed tons of screens on laptops. Generally it’s harder than Framework, true, but it’s not impossible. Even if you have to pay a shop $800 to fix the screen, you’re still coming out cheaper than the Framework.

    There’s zero financial reason to buy a Framework, ever. It will not save you any money. That being said, some people want to buy them to support the company, or because they like the repairability/upgradability, and sure, those are valid reasons to buy them. But don’t spread lies saying it will save you money. They are expensive products with mediocre build quality.

  • The price is 38% higher than a comparable ASUS laptop. That also doesn’t include Windows. (Which is how I would buy it, but most people would want Windows on it.)

    Now let’s say you upgrade it. That’s another $600 for a new motherboard down the road, plus maybe new ram and ssd, but we’ll say it stays on DDR5. That’s $2570 for the laptop and one upgrade, compared to $2460 if you buy two ASUSes. And what do you get for that money?

    Framework:

    1. A laptop.
    2. A motherboard with no RAM and no SSD. Maybe you could use it one day if you invest a bunch of money into getting more parts and one of those cases. Then you’ll maybe have a mini PC after you spend a lot more money.

    ASUS (or, just normal laptops I guess):

    1. A laptop.
    2. Another whole god damned laptop that you can use for something else or give to a family member or sell or something, because it’s an entire laptop.
  • To be clear, I’m not saying their laptops are bad. I’m saying they’re mediocre and overpriced. They’ve got some really neat features, like how easy they are to repair and upgrade, but if the price of buying one laptop from them, then upgrading it once is the same as buying three comparable traditional laptops, then I really don’t see the point.

  • That’s because they’re really expensive and actually quite mediocre. I really wanted to love my framework, but the build quality is way worse than the price tag would suggest.

  • Even if they weren’t abandoned, you shouldn’t use them.

  • Yeah, I think that’s definitely only a correlation. They’re both probably caused by lack of critical thinking and poor ability to assess risk.

  • I’m glad it works for you, but it simply does not work for me. Maybe you could try yourself on some of my libraries, because I have never gotten it to save me any time. It’s just spending money and making the work less fun for no reason. Oh, also not having the copyrights to the things that go in my code base, don’t forget that.

  • If the majority of your time is spent on the easy work, you’re probably not a senior dev. If you are, maybe you shouldn’t be.

    Yes, we still have to do the easy work, but it doesn’t take much time. I’d rather do it myself and know that it’s done right, than let an AI do it and have to fix all of its mistakes. In my experience, it takes the same amount of time.

  • Even if it does write code that works, it usually (about 50% of the time in my experience) has bugs, and sometimes those bugs can be really difficult to spot. For me, it has never saved me any time. I’m either fixing something it doesn’t know how to do correctly, or going over its code with a fine tooth comb because when it says, “this is production ready code, with no bugs,” it’s usually wrong. That takes a lot of time. It’s easier for me to just write the code correctly myself.

    Admittedly, I haven’t used that new model that Anthropic revoked access to the public to recently. Maybe that one is good enough for government work.

  • Sure, but your original question was about evolution getting rid of the genes necessary for a micropenis. That condition is very possible in our gene pool. Yes, there probably aren’t people who grow fins, even though that’s technically possible with enough specific mutations, so sure, evolution will eventually effectively get rid of traits in a species even if they’re not life threatening (though enough mutation for a human to grow fins would probably be deadly), but then your talking about evolution on the scale of millions of years.

  • Because there are so many humans that someone’s almost definitely gonna have it. If there were like a million people, then we probably wouldn’t see many of these traits, but there are 8 billion people around. That means on average, traits that are one in a million are in 8,000 people. Traits that are one in a billion are still likely to be in a handful of people.

    If it’s incompatible with life, no one will have that trait, because no one will be born with it. If it merely prevents you from reproducing, it just won’t be heritable, but the mutations/anomalies will still happen, so people will have them.

  • K. It’s astounding to me that after decades in the business, he’s still writing code that can be written by basically an intern.

    When I try to get AI to write my code, it stumbles all over itself just failing to understand the simplest of my libraries. (Literally it made multiple mistakes using the fucking tokenizer library I wrote that is so simple, an intern would have no problem with it.)

  • Tell him this: If you’re writing that much boilerplate (grunt work), you’re probably doing something wrong. If AI can write your normal work, you really should be learning, so not using AI at all.

  • Evolution still doesn’t work that way. If it prevents you from reproducing (like this probably would), it will be selected against, meaning it will be extremely rare (like this is), but it will never just go away unless it isn’t compatible with life (eg, missing an X chromosome).

  • Why? It’s not even that compelling at the normal price. If it were 3x the price, who would possibly want to buy it?
