Well, you can't really come up with a novel material to dissipate faster because the math I presented is actually assuming perfect efficiency. If you understood the math you would have noticed the physical constant governing that process. I never came up with any arguments against it, I am just stating a fact that it would take a 100 megawatt data center a 250k ish square meters of radiating surface.

I am against data centers in space for more practical reasons though, space isn't a good environment to really build anything and we are decades or centuries away from doing anything like it. The data transfer won't be ideal via microwave transmissions for many of the things you are going to want to use the data centers for. Getting the material itself to space is far fetched and manufacturing in space requires an entire earth bound supply chain and adding the step of launching into space isn't going to be cost effective at any scale.

Data centers they should be smaller, distributed and hooked up to the L3 fiberoptics network and instead of subsidizing mega corporations we should be educating and empowering people to self host hardware they own and control in their own home to build a distributed cloud. I don't care about data centers in and of themselves or where they are. I care that the capitalist governments are going to squander the capital build out for things I don't like such as surveillance, military industrial tech and bull shit. Since they operate as a get rich quarterly scheme and not a long term asset for man kind, the build outs are going to be where the land use is cheapest and those all happen to be sensitive ecosystems facing other challenges already, otherwise they'd be desirable and expensive.

Sounds reasonable for me to cancel Mullvad and tell everyone else to cancel. I don't care if that piece of shit white supremacist Nazi did it as a personal choice or as part of the company. He is my enemy, I am at war with him and I will not do anything to support him. Hopefully enough people stand up so they put him out on his ass and he loses everything which is less than Nazi's deserve.

To run a data center in space you would need some kind of reactor producing around 100 MW. If rejecting 100 MW at 800 K

The number is the Stefan-Boltzmann constant (σ) https://physics.knox.edu/OnlineHW/zTest-PhysicalConstants.html

A≈5,065 m²

So roughly:

5,100 m² of radiating surface

That is a square about:

√(5065) ≈71 m per side

If it is a double-sided radiator panel, the physical panel area could be about half:

2,530 m² of panel, about 50 m × 50 m, assuming both sides radiate effectively.

Also temperature matters enormously so

At emissivity 0.85:

So the answer is about 5,000 m² (lol this is like "a football field" on each side) at 800 K, but balloons to absurd levels like hundreds of thousands of m² if you are trying to dump room-temperature waste heat which there would be a significant amount of. That is for a single small data center at current power needs. In the US alone data centers use 176 TWh (https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/R48646), so there is no chance we are going to be migrating a significant portion of it into space.

My favorite part about data centers in space is it may actually be impossible from a physics standpoint to build the heat radiators large enough for even a small one. Even though space is cold and would seem to make sense, it is also a destructive vacuum and to radiate even a small amount of heat outside of a shielded core would take a huge array of radiators

That is their stated claim. Tear downs prove that it has more sophisticated surveillance equipment installed and lenses pointed at wider angles to capture drivers photos, pedestrians faces, car makes and models, and send it for processing. It is a wide area dragnet that shares freely with police and ICE.

If the company puts up a sign notifying that there are cameras on the premises then under Article 6.1(f) https://gdpr-info.eu/art-6-gdpr/ it is allowed due to "legitimate interest" in deterring crime, securing premises, promoting general safety. This could be argued in a court that it fails the balancing test and that they could and should use more narrow means of collection but the way the courts have ruled I don't think you'd win that case. Although to be fair the EU doesn't use common law or case law for decisions so it could be up to the particular judge.

Going back to the article though, if a person with the glasses is filming for "purely personal or household activity," the entire GDPR is exempt under Article 2(2)(c) https://gdpr-info.eu/art-2-gdpr/

GDPR regulates the data and the processing, not the act of filming or the expectation of privacy for an exempt usage. If they decide to sell this on a creeper site that is different but I wouldn't look to GDPR to be the primary legal framework for this being explicitly illegal. The actions under original article would more directly be a violation of multiple other national laws like Germany's "KunstURHG" and France's "Droit à l'image"

It is an encrypted file using AES-256 so unless your threat model is state actors dedicating a data center to brute forcing it, it's probably ok mostly anywhere.
