  • The status quo has changed permanently. It doesn't matter what the US does; Iran now controls the strait and nobody can stop them from charging whatever tolls they want, only letting through ships for their allies, etc. Trump permanently ended the concept of freedom of navigation that Iran had previously abided by when he idiotically decided to attack them anyway, because Iran has zero reason to trust US diplomacy and respect for international law ever again.

  • That's cool and all, but the main reasons modern concrete structures don't last are either:

    1. They're full of steel reinforcement (because it would be unacceptably expensive to build structures relying entirely on compression the way the Romans did) and the steel deteriorates, or
    2. They become functionally obsolete regardless of the continuing stability of the structure.

    There are precious few things we build these days, aside from deliberate monuments, that we even want to last 100+ years to begin with. Even huge things like the Hoover Dam aren't meant to be permanent on that kind of timescale.

  • On the one hand, yes, fully enforcing these things would be gross overpolicing.

    On the other hand, the selective enforcement is, by design, a way to manufacture an excuse to harass and persecute minorities/undesirables.

    The correct solution is to relax or abolish the laws themselves until they diminish to the point that fully enforcing them is reasonable.
