  • I've used this exact thing in the past with stellar results, a Yoga (forgot model) with soldered RAM that couldn't even boot continued to be useful for many more years.

    as to reliability, if you already tolerate non-ECC RAM in your workstation, you're fine; it's astounding how present bit flips are in everyday use, even from supposedly non-defective hardware, so automated backups of the multi-version kind should be the first thing you set up on your workstation.

  • I gave up on mine for a privacy unrelated reason: they often reboot the thing remotely, for updating or whatnot. not a big deal per se, the problem - my local network stops working, and that I will not abide. so once I stopped using it, the rest (pihole, unbond, etc) came on its own and now I'm not going back.

  • that's what syncthing is for. you can set it up to sync the Notes folder to your other devices in a read/write way or just one way, so you got your central repo.

    also, qown has nextcloud notes sync built in.

  • why would you host anything? that's just an app. QOwnNotes (stupidest name ever) stores .MD files that you can syncthing, rsync, copy, edit externally, whatever, allowing you never to be locked-in again. all the toolboxes can be turned off, netting you a UI that looks like apple's notes.

    they successfully ruined the best OS for software development and made it into this iOS-isized gimmick that tries to stymie the thing that made it great - its UNIX heritage. super-happy with plasma, don't miss one thing from that era.

    except maybe the snow leopard era UI, that was rad... maybe some day a libre OS X will appear.

    this is akin to cleaning out your snowed-in driveway with a twin-engine afterburner from an F14 Tomcat - holy shit, it actually cleaned the thing! saved me a buncha time! and it cost pennies!

    yeah, but:

    • gas is subsidised by Northrop-Grumman's investors for the first year or so; afterwards it'll cost you dearly. and the maintenance, madonn'
    • there are no city snow cleaners no more and no store is selling shovels
    • it obliterated all the trees and grass and critters and shit and damaged parked cars
    • you polluted the shit out of your sight line, nothing will grow there for generations and the runoff poisoned every body of water this shit touches
    • now you gotta clean the burned shit
    • nobody in your neighborhood can get no gas no more; there's some two boroughs over, but it's 3x the price
    • nobody can fix their cars with cheap parts, all raw materials go towards NG's production/maintenance
    • the "explode" and "afterburner" buttons are kinda close together so the former happens eventually
    • everybody says you're fucking loco and fucking stop with that shit but everytime you press the blast button, a pleasant "you're so awesome!" voice booms and it makes you feel very special

  • I am the first to pile on shit on people who are like buy new stuff, but in this instance, yeah, get a $20 laptop with a busted screen or sumsuch, install debian, and use it normally (docker compose).

    you need the least amount of movable parts in this setup and yours is just too off kilter for a server.

  • we - the techies and early adopters - failed the general public. all they wanted was a micro-website and comms platform; publish their shit, talk to other people. stuff that's easily accomplished with 20-year old software.

    but, not so easily for them. setting up a self-hosted micro-blog/comms platform is as cumbersome and inelegant as it was decades ago and no progress was made to make this any better, it only got worse. so these fucks stepped in and took over.

    we got only ourselves to blame.

  • not dealt with such a thing, but a decomissioned phone or laptop is the most obvious solution. they come with batteries, have seamless transition between power and battery, and you're reusing shit nobody wants no more.

    laptops you can get cheap when they have like busted screens and any reasonably modern (like decade old) can operate in sub-5W territory; coupled with a good battery, that should provide you with tens of hours of battery powered use, and you can expand that, with powerbanks and such.

    alternatively, a cheap phone that can run postmarketOS or mobian. even lower consumption and more options to extend power availability.

  • the one with the stupidest name - qownnotes, it's QT, so it isn't an electron slob and integrates nicely into plasma. when you turn off all the cacophony of the zillion toolbars and stuff, it yields a distraction-free UI ala apple's notes. I use it with subfolders but it's got tags, so you can mimic the same functionality.

    it's got buncha stuff in it (its own nextcloud sync, AI summary support, etc.), which thankfully is/can be turned off.

  • jellyfin has the option to host your books, and with the OPDS plugin you can pull books directly off the server with compatible readers (koreader, moon+, etc), no need to copy things around manually.
