  • For some issues, especially related to programming and Linux, I feel like I kinda have to at this point. Google seems to have become useless, and DDG was never great to begin with but is arguably better than Google now. I've had some very obscure issues that I spent quite some time searching for, only to drop it into ChatGPT and get a link to some random forum post that discusses it. The biggest one was a Linux kernel regression that was posted on the same day in the Arch Linux forums somewhere. Despite having a hunch about what it could be and searching/struggling for over an hour, I couldn't find anything. ChatGPT then managed to link me the post (and a suggested fix: switching to LTS kernel) in less than minute.

    For general purpose search tho, hell no. If I want to know factual data that's easy to find I'll rely on the good old search engine. And even if I have to use an LLM, I don't really trust it unless it gives me links to the information or I can verify that what it says is true.

  • Yeah I'm on a 5700 or something with 64 GB of DDR4 and I don't see any issues with it yet. I went that route because I could keep my mobo and it was also way cheaper than DDR5 back then. I figured I'd rather have more older RAM than a full system upgrade.

    Is RAM already at a price that it's worth considering selling one of those sticks? :3

  • The first thing I remember from that time is sitting in the living room and playing Halo, then hearing that the economy was crashing and everything was going to shit. And it kinda did, I remember a lot of stress about my parents keeping their jobs. I'm from the mid 90s and this is the first moment that I can remember where I became aware of how fucked up the world really was. A shattering of the protective bubble that you experience as a kid.

  • You're probably aware, but Bitwig studio runs natively on Linux. And tools like yabridge can allow you to run many VST plugins as well. Though it remains a bit of a hassle compared to Windows. I've for instance lost access to a NI plugin because their new all-in-one installer/verification program won't work on Linux

  • Uhhh not really no. Most of us were raised to hide away our emotions. I've been bullied for crying or being "weak". This expectation still exists among adults and is perpetuated by both men and women (though definitely not all of them). It only takes one or two of these toxic people to turn a whole group towards toxic masculinity it seems.

    Also, anywhere I go I'm aware that most women find me scary just for existing in a place. I was just out for a walk and just happened to end up on a path closely behind a woman who was also walking there. She looked behind a few times and sped up her pace, while I tried to reduce pace in order to not spook her any further. It's not exactly nice to get the feeling that half of the population seems to immediately distrust you just for the actions of a small minority of men.

  • Not sure what hobby this is, but honestly it goes for almost every one of my hobbies. Especially photography. I could probably just get good with my Canon EOS 40D for digital and my Canon EOS 300 for analog photography. But collecting new gear is so satisfying. There's always something new to improve. "If only I had X, then I could really do Y well". Though I at least feel like I've somewhat contained myself. I haven't bought any new camera or lens that was more than like 500 bucks, and honestly with what I have now I don't really feel the need to upgrade.

  • It does feel like that yeah. But honestly it would probably still be pretty fast if the GPU driver support didn't cease. Being on the integrated GPU has made the thing age another 10 years, that piece of shit was already horrendously slow when the Laptop was new

  • Come back to be me when you've experienced the fine Dutch Cuisine of boiled potatoes, plain vegetables, and watery meat as the primary dish of your childhood. Occasionally the boiled potatoes are mixed with slightly undercooked potato slices, and potentially the spices kerrie or nutmeg may be added when the culinary level is exceptionally high that day.

    I know potatoes can be better, but unless they're fried I honestly don't want them in my house anymore

  • Looks like he's just toying around with it in some project. Why would he take other's words for it when he can just test it himself? Try it out, see what happens, draw conclusions.

    There's a lot of mindless hype and a lot of mindless hate around these tools. Makes sense to try these tools and form your own opinion

  • Haha. The video is a bit pessimistic tho, I know people who work at companies with Haskell running in production (who are happy with it). Personally I have used monads, and I've wished for their functionality in other languages like Java, but I couldn't reasonably explain what they are.

    Also, as someone who know just about enough German to understand some of what they're saying, it's always quite hard to follow these videos. My brain doesn't understand it when it hears "Das war ein Befehl!" and the subtitles ramble on about something completely different

  • It slowly started happening in the last few years. And then I got a burn-out. I haven't really written code in months now. I don't think it'd really stress me out, but honestly I just don't really feel like it most of the time. I try to spend most of my time away from a screen

  • Double nope. I have 2 weeks off around Christmas and New Year every year. And besides that I've been dealing with a burn-out for months so it's not like I was working anyway...

  • Technically I didn't make money, I just got some money back. On multiple occasions, a few years after moving homes, the student housing company would suddenly pay back money that I apparently overpaid for gas and electricity. I'd get another email in which they'd apologize (again) and yeet another pile of money my way. It was usually something like 80-200 euros if I remember correctly. Truth is, I never really felt like I was paying much anyway. Compared to what I'm paying now it was absolutely nothing. But hey, I'll never say no to "free money" I guess...

  • Idk, but here in the Netherlands I wonder why restaurants often have so little vegetables. I tend to easily reach the 200 grams of vegetables a day when cooking myself. I'm always surprised how little I get at a restaurant here.

  • A channel that's missing here which I personally really like is TimeGhost history and their other channels World War Two and The Korean War. Their coverage of world war two in real time (which they finished already) was especially great. I'm not necessarily the biggest history nerd, but there's something quite enjoyable about following history "live" this way.

  • Damn that's very lucky. Every device with Nvidia hardware that I installed Linux on has at some point during updates or whatever gone to shit. However I must say that it has become way better in recent years. My Thinkpad was the worst because it was my first Linux device and it had an integrated Intel gpu and a dedicated Nvidia GPU and getting it to work was horror. In the end a friend of mine who was better at Linux just forced it to always use the Nvidia card because then at least stuff worked reliably (tm).

    But even then it pretty much always died during Ubuntu release updates. I've nuked my whole system once because the screen went black (due to GPU drivers presumably) during one and after an hour or so I forcefully turned off the laptop because I couldn't do anything anymore. After restarting into a tty my laptop was in some sort of limbo between 2 Ubuntu versions and I basically just had to reinstall.

    Ever since I made Linux (Arch btw) my main OS for gaming at the start of this year it has been quite stable though. I did switch to LTS kernels and after that everything has been pretty chill.
