  • It's frustrating I know, but I truly think it's less culture and more just hairless ape brain stuff. Our brains are lazy by evolutionary design and in terms of social communication, it's sadly more effective to aim straight for the emotional limbic system. We should be creatures capable of sustained rational thought, but…

    <gestures broadly>

that obviously isn't the case and never has been. It's all much worse when you're someone not as prone to emotional appeals, but the trick is to appeal to the emotion and then follow it up with a little bit of the objective reality.

  • But like calling the Meta glasses "Pervert Glasses" it's not about being technically accurate in your description of the scope of surveillance, it's about making it socially unacceptable. It's why using "weird" worked so well for Waltz - it didn't provide an all encompassing description of why Trump and his ilk were dangerous and bad for the country, it just nailed how to shine a light on how they're socially unacceptable (to rational and sane ppl obvs.)

  • Go slop, stock drops?

  • or pervPods?

  • At least in Northern Virginia where most of the existing data centers are and where most of the announced build out is planned, populations are steady or falling - not a lot of new residential buildouts for them to tie new power capacity to, and current neighborhoods already have existing power capacity built out for them. Anything the data centers ask for is pretty much 100% for their use and not anyone else's.

  • The kinks will never get worked out - just enough so that the payouts they have to inevitably make don't eat into their profits too much. I don't say that as "this technology sucks" so much as "this is a problem without a solution". Roads, traffic, pedestrians, etc are all too random to design self driving vehicles that don't make mistakes. We could have gold plated public transit and every sort of pedestrian friendly bell and whistle for the amount of funding it would take to get 80% of the way there. And it doesn't actually solve any of our infrastructure problems, it just adds "convenience".

  • I think in the eyes of many investors, Elon has lost whatever mojo they thought he had. As Elon never had any mojo to speak of, this mostly just means the investors are finally catching up with reality.

  • The best thing about Tim Sweeney is that he consistently has the most wrong take on any issue. He's like the Lou Gehrig of being an idiot.

  • Serious answer: having been subjected to this by my pulmonologist annually for years, they do multiple runs (often including runs after a rescue inhaler is administered), and it's about precisely comparing the results - so no, they don't trust people to pinch their own noses 🙂

  • Honestly it struggles with both math and art too. Also not actually "good" at writing.

  • While Google and Meta provide water usage data for individual facilities, Amazon did not disclose site-specific information.

More than a little skeptical of Amazon's data, as without facility by facility numbers, it's impossible to get any sort of sanity check on how accurate their numbers are.

  • Only politicians can be that arrogant.

Have you never heard C-suite and/or millionaires talk? They all sound like that - that's what unearned power sounds like.

  • A lot of good reasons in the comments and many of them apply to me to some degree, but honestly the main driving force is my own neurodivergent food apathy and pickiness. I know if I cook, it's going to be food I like and prepared how I like and that makes it worth it to me. By elevating it, it's enough to get me to want to eat which has always sort of been a battle for me.

  • "but conservatives want to look at little kid's junk before they can play sports."

    FTFY 🙂

  • When you say you have it cite its sources, do you actually read the source? Because I've noticed models continually cite sources that don't support what it's saying.

And it most definitely cannot think/reason/ideate - full stop.

  • What alternative are you proposing?

  • Instead of reading the AI summary, maybe read the actual quote snippets or even better, the actual linked pages.
