  • lol some of us do. For the record I’m one of the people who elected for a different career because the country gives 0 shits about science. PhD stipends are laughable, I make 3-4x that as an entry level tech employee.

  • This is true although that’s what enforcing strict type checking and good linting is supposed to help with. I think it’s partially an issue that you can kinda just type what you think and not everyone thinks efficiently/ programmer-y

  • I agree with this but why are we all pitching for completely new platforms. Why don’t we all just go and contribute to stoat and implement federation instead of waiting for an entirely new platform to come up. I understand many open source people like fragmentation, but I personally would wish for more concentrated dev time on a single project. Also having one centralized place for most work makes it easier to fork later and have a solid base to work off of instead of a bunch of different ideas over and over

  • Thanks for the stats! Hm that is truly depressing. Even with better turnout there are so many fricken boomers damn. I guess that makes sense given the generation moniker. Is this based on 2024 data? I’m somewhat inclined to believe that low Gen Z voter turnout is at least partially a symptom of being disengaged from the Democratic Party putting out machine candidates all the time but I of course have no way to quantify that atm.

  • Can we get the raw numerical counts for this? We’re comparing percentages which is bad practice. I.e. it wouldn’t matter if 90% of 65+ voters vote if it’s like 1000 people. Turnout isn’t the same as actual votes cast which I think you understand but you didn’t add a source to your “LOT of boomers” claim. Not saying that you’re incorrect but I’d like to see actual numbers if possible

  • Yeah, it’s buggy as hell every time I’ve tried it. Lots of random bugs that were open for a long time. Also not open source so I realize that doesn’t matter to everyone but for me it does especially for a browser.

  • As a fellow young adult who feels like they’re still figuring out wtf is going on I’ve found having outlets is good. It’s certainly not as easy to have free time where you have the mental energy to engage with something even if you want to but spending time and commiserating with others or doing a hobby very casually is good. I definitely struggle with letting some of my hobbies that I used to be extremely competitive/highly skilled at decrease in importance and having my ability reduced slightly. I don’t think there’s really a 1 size fits all answer.

  • The issue is that qt looks out of place on gnome and vice versa for gtk. You don’t see the issue because you don’t care about ui consistency as much as i do. That’s totally fine. We’re different people with different opinions. That’s the great part about open source. Yes I understand these people have lives outside programming, I do as well. I’m appreciative of the work that people do on many of the big projects and tools that I use. But that’s not going to stop me from wanting or hoping that things will get better. I of course would like to have more designers involved in more open source projects. Also in regard to funding where do you think it’s gonna come from? If people don’t want stuff like a way to develop for multiple frameworks then why would there ever be funding? The only way to get stuff is for a lot of people to want something and to work towards it. Me advocating for this has nothing to do with “demoralizing developers.” Again I’m not going to those devs and saying “rewrite this” I’m simply advocating for things that I think would be beneficial. There’s no reason I can’t do that. I’m not sure why you’re trying to gate-keep my opinion behind “how dare you not be thankful, go and write it yourself!” We can disagree about how much we think it’s important but I’m still going to have my opinion.

  • Yes go and write them is the usual response to these and I understand the sentiment. But also one can’t rewrite many many complex apps by themselves. I understand people wanting to do whatever they want sure. My point is it wouldn’t be an issue as much if there wasn’t as much fragmentation. If it was easy to write for both qt and gtk at once then people wouldn’t have to complain about one or the other all the time. In order to have an actual change it has to happen as a community not as an individual. It’s great that people can write stuff in whatever they want, I like being able to try out different frameworks. But sometimes unification across the desktop is something some people want. I don’t think you can just invalidate what I’m saying with the just go write it then. It’s not like I’m going to devs GitHub’s and raising issues saying “write this in gtk right now!!!” And for the record I have the same problems with proprietary software too. I don’t use windows really except for work but it looks like dogshit and a cobbled together mess.

  • Depends on your definition of winning. Lots of foss projects that look ugly and are not designed with ui in mind because it’s made by devs who are used to doing lower level stuff. Plus the fragmentation of qt and gtk. Winning would be easily building applications that could be native across DEs and actually look nice.

  • Literally this. Let me use my own fucking box and my own goddamn pc how I want with big monitor. Also put DP on it fuck HDMI. I don’t need trackers in my bloody tv OS. My tv has an OS!!! That’s ridiculous. Sorry this is one of those things I’ve always been super pissed about.
