  • Ugh, the fact that people are referring to these pre-planned and staged pictures as proof of anything shows the damage this did.

    These pictures don't prove anything, Garcia could be dead in those pictures and they could have taken him to a goddamn taxidermist and posed him. The fact that a US lawmaker who seems to not be a fascist moron says he met with Garcia and Garcia is alive is proof, but those photos are pure bullshit that don't tell us anything and should not have been shared.

  • What the fuck was that picture Van Hollen sent out? Like, if you only saw the photo of Garcia talking with Van Hollen at that table you would think he's totally fine and just on a vacation down there. Where was Garcia's prison uniform, the cell he was staying in, his cellmates, the armed guards escorting him, the shackles etc., any kind of stuff that might tell us how his day to day life has actually been down there? Letting the guards clean up what they've been doing to him, stick him in civilian clothes, and bring him to a fancy hotel to meet with Van Hollen was all propaganda bullshit and this senator signal boosted it.

    I'm really grateful he went down there and got this meeting, but posting that misleading picture was dumb.

They're trying to give the appearance of a fair legal system by letting the trials go on while bending over backwards to give the government everything they want and every procedural advantage they can come up with. It seems like by the time we get to the actual trials they're just going to be hollow propaganda events with a predetermined outcome, and afterwards everyone will say "Well, we can't really be living in a dictatorship, there was a trial!   • Yep, also they're making every defendant file individually now, which is going to slow things down a lot and will probably lead to a lot of people going unrepresented. Also, they refused in the Abrego Garcia case to order the administration to bring back someone we know was wrongly sent to the Salvadoran dungeon, so probably these defendants are going to have to challenge the governments actions while they're still stuck down there unable to help their attorneys.

    They're giving us the appearance of the rule of law while doing everything in their power to rig this in this administration's favor.

    We can and should make people waive their jury rights when they sign up to be soldiers or federal employees or contractors or elected officials. Think of it like how you have to agree to arbitration with a company when installing their software or whatever, you don't sign the contract/take the oath of office/etc. if you don't want to answer to an ICC panel.

    Article III of the Constitution is like two pages because everyone in the 18th century convention hall without air conditioning in the Washington DC summer was hot and tired by the time they got to it and it basically just says "Congress should make a court system of some sort."     Like, as someone who's got a little bit of a fascination with criminal justice stuff, I can't even remember how many times I've seen prosecutors and judges just hammer people and organizations with pre-trial detentions, freezing accounts and asset seizures, bringing in irrelevant but prejudicial evidence, compelling testimony from people by threatening them with prosecution, and just a million other coercive means of forcing guilty pleas or verdicts when they want to, but none of them are willing to do any of those things to this guy no matter how many times he just shits all over them and it's just wild to me still

  • Yeah, the DNC is a huge and essential part of why this country has gone to shit because there are a lot of just straight up evil people in the Democratic party, and until that changes nothing in this country is going to meaningfully improve. Anytime there's a news article about a Republican doing something awful there should be a comment pointing out how certain Democratic party members have enabled them to do that thing.

    That all being said, there are also a lot of good people trying to do good things in the Democratic party as well (an essential difference between them and the GOP), when the Democratic party in general loses elections to Republicans, the evil people get stronger and the good people in the Democratic party get less influential. So, yeah, voting blue across the board is the right call, frustrating as they may be.
